Indoor PM0.1 and PM2.5 in Hanoi: Chemical characterization, source identification, and health risk assessment

Le-Ha T. Vo et al.

Summary: This study provides comprehensive insights into the chemical composition, source identification, and health risk assessment of indoor particulate matter (PM) in urban areas of Vietnam. The results suggest that indoor PM2.5 is mainly derived from outdoor sources, while indoor PM0.1 is derived from both indoor and outdoor sources. The study also highlights the presence of various trace elements in indoor PM, with differences in concentrations between seasons and dwelling types. Monte Carlo simulation indicates that the intake of TEs in PM2.5 can lead to high carcinogenic risk for people over 60 years old and unacceptable non-carcinogenic risks for all ages, particularly at roadside houses in winter.

Measurement report: Long-term changes in black carbon and aerosol optical properties from 2012 to 2020 in Beijing, China

Jiaxing Sun et al.

Summary: Atmospheric aerosols, including equivalent black carbon (eBC) and aerosol optical properties, have experienced significant changes in Beijing, China, due to the implementation of the Clean Air Action Plan. The reduction in eBC and the light extinction coefficient of fine particles indicate improvements in air quality. The increase in single-scattering albedo (SSA) and mass extinction efficiency (MEE) suggests an increasing role of scattering aerosols in radiative forcing. Additionally, the changes in brown carbon (BrC) and its contribution to total BrC highlight the enhanced secondary formation of BrC. These findings have important implications for aerosol-boundary layer interactions and air quality improvement.

Variable Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Air Quality across 91 Indian Cities

Ansar Khan et al.

Summary: India implemented a three-phase nationwide lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a unique opportunity to evaluate the impact of restrictions on air quality in Indian cities. Statistical assessments showed significant decreases in AQI and various pollutants during the lockdown, highlighting the contribution of industrial and transportation sectors to urban pollution.

Switching to electric vehicles can lead to significant reductions of PM2.5 and NO2 across China

Liqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Transportation contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. Transitioning to electric vehicles is a key strategy to reduce emissions and improve air quality. During the lockdown in China, reduced traffic was directly linked to improvements in air quality, and a full conversion to EVs could lead to substantial reductions in PM2.5 and NO2 across most of China.
