Structural Connectivity of Asia's Protected Areas Network: Identifying the Potential of Transboundary Conservation and Cost-Effective Zones

Melissa Penagos Gaviria et al.

Summary: This study presents a quantitative assessment of the structural connectivity of protected areas in Asia and finds that it is very low. There are differences in connectivity between different regions, with higher connectivity in islands. Only 15% of the cost-effective zones in Asia are designated as protected areas, highlighting the need to expand coverage and prioritize areas that increase connectivity.

Big cats in borderlands: challenges and implications for transboundary conservation of Asian leopards

Mohammad S. Farhadinia et al.

Summary: The article focuses on four threatened leopard subspecies in continental Asia and the challenges and opportunities they face. It reveals that most leopards' remaining ranges are in borderlands, relying on transboundary collaboration for conservation. The authors highlight three key transboundary landscapes and stress the importance of international cooperation.

Translating global commitments into action for successful forest landscape restoration: Lessons from Ing watershed in northern Thailand

Lok Mani Sapkota et al.

Summary: Forest landscape restoration (FLR) has been a focus of attention due to ambitious restoration targets set by many countries, including those in Southeast Asia. However, governance issues, such as decision making processes, have led to limited space for local community participation, which hinders effective collaboration and success of FLR. Addressing power imbalances and promoting multi-stakeholder platforms are essential to ensure meaningful collaboration and minimize risks of sub-optimal outcomes.
