Chemical Stability of Ascorbic Acid Integrated into Commercial Products: A Review on Bioactivity and Delivery Technology

Xin Yin et al.

Summary: The L-enantiomer of ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, is essential for maintaining physiological processes in humans and animals. The lack of a key enzyme for de novo synthesis of ascorbic acid in some mammals, including humans, has led to the fortification of foods with this vitamin. Understanding the degradation of ascorbic acid in the food matrix and its interaction with coexisting components is crucial for its stability and delivery to the active site.

Ultra deformable vesicles for boosting transdermal delivery of 2-arylpropionic acid class drug for management of musculoskeletal pain

Shreya Kaul et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop and evaluate naproxen transethosomal gel for sustained transdermal delivery for the management of musculoskeletal pain. The results showed that the formulated transethosomal gel possessed a smaller particle size, high entrapment efficiency, and higher skin deposition rate. The developed formulation could be regarded as an ideal substitute for the conventional gel for the management of musculoskeletal pain.

Active targeting via ligand-anchored pH-responsive strontium nanoparticles for efficient nucleic acid delivery into breast cancer cells

Athirah Bakhtiar et al.

Summary: The study introduced self-assembling targeting ligands, such as transferrin and fibronectin, which can electrostatically interact with strontium nanoparticles (SNPs), and analyzed their effects on the size and zeta potential of the resulting hybrid SNPs, cellular uptake, and expression efficiency of transgene-loaded hybrid NPs. The smaller ligand-coated SNPs significantly increased gene transfection activity in both MCF-7 and 4T1 cells, as well as nucleic acid localization into tumor tissues, leading to improved tumor regression activity in a 4T1-tumor xenograft mouse model. The LCSNPs-mediated delivery of p53 gene and MAPK siRNA demonstrated a proof-of-concept for the functionalized nanocarrier formulation to inhibit breast cancer cell growth.

Chemical Permeation Enhancers for Topically-Applied Vitamin C and Its Derivatives: A Systematic Review

Lord Sam Liston et al.

Summary: This paper reports on the permeation-enhancing properties and safety of different chemical permeation enhancers (CPEs) on the topical delivery of vitamin C (VC) and its derivatives. The majority of the CPEs belonged to low toxicity hazard category, and the combination of isopropyl myristate, sorbitan monolaurate, and polyoxyethylene 80 showed the highest permeation enhancement ratio for VC.

Evaluation and clinical comparison studies on liposomal and non-liposomal ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and their enhanced bioavailability

Sreerag Gopi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the oral bioavailability of liposomal vitamin C compared to non-liposomal vitamin C in healthy adults. Liposomal vitamin C was found to have 1.77 times higher bioavailability than non-liposomal vitamin C, with higher values of C-max, AUC(0-)(t), and AUC(0-infinity) due to liposomal encapsulation. Liposomal encapsulated ascorbic acid showed well-organized morphological pattern, uniform particle size, and high efficiency, leading to enhanced bioavailability.
