Initial experiences of cataract & lens surgery in 1269 patients in outpatient clean rooms using a portable laminar air flow device

Radhika Pooja Patel et al.

Summary: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, routine cataract surgery was halted and theatre space was limited. To address this challenge, the study developed a safe cataract pathway in outpatient department clean rooms using a sterile laminar air flow device. The initial experiences of restarting elective cataract surgery in the UK outpatient setting were positive, with no post-operative infections and high patient satisfaction.

Resveratrol suppresses lung cancer by targeting cancer stem-like cells and regulating tumor microenvironment

Chunfeng Xie et al.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a crucial role in tumor initiation and recurrence. Targeting CSCs and the tumor microenvironment (TME) is a novel anti-cancer approach. Resveratrol (RES) inhibits lung cancer by targeting lung cancer stem-like cells (LCSCs) and IL-6 in the TME.

Biomimetic synthesis and characterisation of homogenouse gold nanoparticles and estimation of its cytotoxity against breast cancer cell line

Kourosh Shakerimanesh et al.

Summary: In this study, spherical gold nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using the water extract of Haplophyllum Obtusifolium. The physicochemical characteristics of the nanoparticles were determined and their effectiveness against mouse breast cancer cells was evaluated. The results showed that the nanoparticles had a spherical morphology with an average size of 12 nm. The aggregation of the particles was found to be in accordance with expectations. Furthermore, the nanoparticles exhibited lower toxicity against NIH3T3 cell lines.

ROS and DNA repair in spontaneous versus agonist-induced NETosis: Context matters

Dhia Azzouz et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a crucial role in neutrophil extracellular trap formation. Recent studies have revealed that agonists inducing NETosis stimulate specific kinase activation and genome-wide transcription, while excess ROS generated by NADPH oxidase activating agonists lead to genome-wide DNA damage. DNA repair proteins are necessary for decondensation of chromatin in these cells. Inhibiting early steps of oxidative DNA damage repair proteins suppresses spontaneous NETosis, while inhibiting late-stage repair proteins promotes baseline NETosis. These findings highlight the differential regulation of spontaneous and agonist-induced NETosis by ROS, oxidative DNA damage, transcription, and DNA repair.

Biliverdin Reductase A Protects Lens Epithelial Cells against Oxidative Damage and Cellular Senescence in Age-Related Cataract

Yang Huang et al.

Summary: Age-related cataract (ARC) is a common cause of blindness worldwide, and it is associated with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induction of lens epithelial cell (LEC) senescence. Biliverdin reductase A (BVRA) is capable of converting biliverdin into bilirubin, thus having the ability to scavenge ROS and protect LECs against oxidative stress through various mechanisms. However, in age-related cataract, the expression of BVRA and concentration of bilirubin are decreased, leading to a diminished antioxidative effect.

Ferroptosis-induced anticancer effect of resveratrol with a biomimetic nano-delivery system in colorectal cancer treatment

Ziting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated for the first time that Resveratrol could inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells through the ROS-dependent ferroptosis pathway and promote ferroptosis by downregulating specific proteins. Biomimetic nanocarriers were developed to improve the delivery efficiency of Resveratrol for colorectal cancer treatment.

Evaluation of Gallic Acid-Coated Gold Nanoparticles as an Anti-Aging Ingredient

Yun-Zhen Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that GA-AuNPs have a superior ability to inhibit high-glucose-mediated MMP-1-elicited ECM degradation by reducing ROS production. These nanoparticles were found to block the phosphorylation of c-Jun, c-Fos, ATF-2, and NF kappa B through p38 MAPK/ERK signaling pathway, leading to the down-regulation of MMP-1 gene and protein expression under high glucose conditions.

A resveratrol-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier hydrogel to enhance the anti-UV irradiation and anti-oxidant efficacy

Liu Miao et al.

Summary: Preparation of RES-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier gel (RES-NLC-gel) improved RES stability and accumulation in the epidermis. The gel effectively scavenged free radicals, protected skin cells from UV radiation, decreased expression of apoptotic proteins, and increased expression of survival proteins. Pretreatment with RES-NLC-gel reduced erythema, wrinkles, and scabs on mouse skin, decreased epidermal thickness, and increased antioxidant enzyme activities in skin tissue. RES-NLC-gel demonstrated significant anti-UV irradiation and antioxidant activity in vivo, showing great potential in skin protection.
