Antileishmanial and lung adenocarcinoma cell toxicity of Withania somnifera (Linn.) dunal root and fruit extracts

Mohamed A. A. Orabi et al.

Summary: The study assessed the anti-Leishmania major and lung adenocarcinoma cytotoxicity of Withania somnifera root and fruit extracts. Results indicated that the n-butanol sub-extracts from both root and fruit showed significant antileishmanial properties, with mild to moderate effects exhibited by other sub-extracts. Notably, the root EtOAc and n-BuOH sub-extracts had the highest activity against amastigotes, with low cytotoxicity on the A549 cell line.

Independent Circulation of Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica in Their Respective Sandfly Vectors for Transmission of Zoonotic and Chronic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Co-Existing in a Mixed Focus of Central Tunisia

Mohammed Abdo Saghir Abbas et al.

Summary: Zoonotic and chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis overlap in Central Tunisia. The proximity of human settlements to rodent reservoir hosts resulted in the mixed transmission of both Leishmania species. The epidemiology of leishmaniases in this region is complex and requires efficient control measures to reduce the indoor abundance of sandfly vectors.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Two new C-glycosidic ellagitannins and accompanying tannins from Lawsonia inermis leaves and their cytotoxic effects

Mohamed A. A. Orabi et al.

Summary: Investigation into tannins found in Lawsonia inermis leaves led to the discovery of two new C-glycosidic ellagitannins, along with several known ellagitannins and a polyphenolic constituent. These compounds showed cytotoxic effects on human oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines, with tellimagrandin II exhibiting the highest tumor-specific cytotoxicity.

Carissa macrocarpa Leaves Polar Fraction Ameliorates Doxorubicin-Induced Neurotoxicity in Rats via Downregulating the Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Markers

Mohamed A. A. Orabi et al.

Summary: The polar fraction of C. macrocarpa leaves was found to possess neuroprotective activity against doxorubicin-induced toxicity, improving cognitive function, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, increasing NGF levels, reducing apoptosis, and restoring brain histological architecture. Molecular modeling showed that flavan-3-ol derivatives in the fraction have a strong binding affinity with TACE enzymes, supporting the observed neuroprotective effects in vivo. This suggests a promising role for this fraction in alleviating chemotherapy-induced side effects.
