Development and validation of the Reward Deficiency Syndrome Questionnaire (RDSQ-29)

Eszter Kotyuk et al.

Summary: The present study developed and tested a 29-item Reward Deficiency Syndrome Questionnaire (RDSQ-29) to assess the psychological and behavioral aspects of RDS. The questionnaire showed good fit and construct validity, and revealed strong relationship between sensation-seeking and the RDS scale.

Opioids and the developing brain: time to rethink perinatal care for infants of opioid-dependent mothers

James P. Boardman et al.

Summary: The impact of opioids on the developing brain, especially in infants born to women with opioid use during pregnancy, is significant. Research has mainly focused on maternal and pregnancy outcomes, with less attention given to the long-term effects on children. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal management for pregnant women with opioid use disorder and babies with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, with a focus on childhood outcomes and brain development.

Summary: In the United States, nonaddicting/nonpharmacological strategies are available to effectively treat pain and manage chronic pain without opioids. The utilization of the Genetic Addiction Risk Severity (GARS) test and H-Wave can attenuate pain and help prevent addiction.

The Impact of a Prenatal Education Program for Opioid-Dependent Mothers on Breastfeeding Rates of Infants at Risk for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Brian Brocato et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of a prenatal education program for opioid-dependent women on breastfeeding frequency, newborn hospital length of stay, and cost of care. The results showed that prenatal NAS education significantly increased breastfeeding initiation rates and decreased newborn length of stay.

Summary: From 2010 to 2017, significant increases in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and maternal opioid use disorder (MOD) rates were observed in the US, especially after the implementation of new International Classification of Disease codes in 2016. There were notable variations at the state level in both NAS and MOD rates.

Phenobarbital and Clonidine as Secondary Medications for Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome

Stephanie L. Merhar et al.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study evaluated the outcomes of infants receiving secondary therapy with phenobarbital or clonidine for treatment of NOWS, in comparison to morphine treatment. Infants treated with phenobarbital had shorter hospital stays and durations of morphine treatment compared to clonidine-treated infants, with higher rates of continued medication use upon discharge.

Dopamine Circuit Mechanisms of Addiction-Like Behaviors

Carli L. Poisson et al.

Summary: Addiction is a complex disease characterized by substance use disorder (SUD), with primary symptoms including exaggerated substance use, social impairment, and risky behavior. Research on rodent models suggests that the striatal dopamine system plays a crucial role in both positive symptoms like increased intake and craving, and impairments in decision making, reduced sociality, and risk taking associated with SUDs. Understanding the heterogeneity of the dopamine system and related networks may lead to more targeted treatments for addiction.

Neonatal Outcomes after Combined Opioid and Nicotine Exposure in Utero: A Scoping Review

Krystyna R. Isaacs et al.

Summary: The majority of pregnant women with opioid use disorder also smoke tobacco but often lack tobacco cessation counseling. The impact of combined exposure to opioids and nicotine in utero on neonatal outcomes is not well-understood. Studies have shown a reduction in birth weight and length for infants with combined exposure to opioids and nicotine, with mixed findings on other neonatal outcomes such as NAS duration and severity. Additional research is needed to accurately predict these outcomes based on dosage and length of nicotine exposure during pregnancy.

A Novel Precision Approach to Overcome the Addiction Pandemic by Incorporating Genetic Addiction Risk Severity (GARS) and Dopamine Homeostasis Restoration

Kenneth Blum et al.

Summary: This article introduces a unique therapeutic precision intervention using a formulation of enkephalinase inhibitors, enkephalin, and dopamine-releasing neuronutrients to induce dopamine homeostasis for the treatment of reward deficiency syndrome. Based on addiction risk severity (GARS) test results, the formulations can stratify the potential for developing opioid use disorder or RDS risk. The article also discusses the potential benefits of medication-assisted treatment with dopamine augmentation and the promise of RDS methodology in reducing the burden of addictive disorders.

Summary: The article discusses the role of habits in addiction and their manifestation in drug choice environments, finding that habitual preference does not promote drug choice but rather favors abstinence.
