Impact of Structural Deformations on the Performance of Li-Ion Insertion Hosts

Jessica L. Andrews et al.

Summary: Li-ion batteries have revolutionized the storage and transportation of energy over the past three decades. Only a small number of materials have been found capable of accommodating fast ionic diffusion necessary for practical devices. This perspective provides an overview of the structural features that aid or hinder fast lithium ion transport, with a particular focus on the role of rotation of rigid subunits.

Facile synthesis and electrochemical properties of truncated octahedral Al, Ni dual doped LiMn2O4 cathode materials

Yang Tao et al.

Summary: In this study, LiAl0.1NixMn1.90-xO4 cathode materials were prepared via elements doping and morphology controlling strategy. The co-doping of Al and Ni improved the structural stability of LiMn2O4 and suppressed the Jahn-Teller distortion. The crystal facets were engineered to enhance the Mn dissolution suppression and Li+ ions diffusion. The resulting LiAl0.1Ni0.03Mn1.87O4 sample exhibited high discharge capacity and long cycled stability.

Conflicting Role of Inversion of the LiMn2O4 Spinel on Lithium-Ion Battery Capacity from First-Principles Calculations

Zijing Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of inversion in the cathode material LiMn2O4 (LMO) on battery capacity from the perspective of Jahn-Teller distortion and manganese dissolution. The charge orderings and magnetic moments of LMO with different inversion structures were found to be related to the battery's properties. The existence of Mn3+ induces strong Jahn-Teller distortion, leading to a decrease in battery capacity. However, the inversion phenomenon does not always have a negative effect on battery capacity, as Jahn-Teller distortion and Mn2+ dissolution compete with each other.

Lithium Manganese Spinel Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yimeng Huang et al.

Summary: Spinel LiMn2O4, an important cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, has excellent rate performance but suffers from severe degradation, especially under extreme voltages and high temperatures. Current understanding and future trends of spinel cathodes and its derivatives with cubic lattice symmetry are discussed, with a focus on degradation mechanisms and further development.
