Role of Dorsomedial Hypothalamus GABAergic Neurons in Sleep-Wake States in Response to Changes in Ambient Temperature in Mice

Lei Li et al.

Summary: Good sleep quality is essential for maintaining attention during wakefulness. Through experiments on mice, it was found that gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons in the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) play an important role in regulating sleep-wake behaviors in response to changes in ambient temperature.

Estrogen Receptor-A in Medial Preoptic Area Contributes to Sex Difference of Mice in Response to Sevoflurane Anesthesia

Yunyun Zhang et al.

Summary: A recent study has found that there are sex differences in response to general anesthesia, but the neural mechanisms behind this are unclear. This study showed that male mice were more sensitive to sevoflurane anesthesia and that estrogen receptor alpha in the medial preoptic area played a critical role in regulating sleep in males. Furthermore, pharmacological inhibition of estrogen receptor alpha eliminated sex differences in sevoflurane anesthesia.

Selective optogenetic activation of orexinergic terminals in the basal forebrain and locus coeruleus promotes emergence from isoflurane anaesthesia in rats

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that activation of orexinergic terminals in the BF or LC facilitates emergence from anesthesia during isoflurane anesthesia, as evidenced by reduced burst suppression ratio and shorter emergence time. Additionally, optical stimulation of orexinergic terminals in the BF and LC improved rat movement scores under 0.8 vol% isoflurane anesthesia.

Nucleus accumbens neurons expressing dopamine D1 receptors modulate states of consciousness in sevoflurane anesthesia

Wei-Wei Bao et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the population activities of neurons expressing dopamine D1 receptor (D1R) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) decrease before sevoflurane-induced loss of consciousness and gradually return after recovery of consciousness. Chemogenetic activation of NAcD1R neurons delays the induction of and accelerates emergence from sevoflurane general anesthesia (GA), while inhibition of these neurons has the opposite effect. Additionally, transient activation of NAcD1R neurons induces significant cortical activation and behavioral emergence during continuous steady-state GA.

GABAergic Neurons in the Dorsal-Intermediate Lateral Septum Regulate Sleep-Wakefulness and Anesthesia in Mice

Di Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that GABAergic neurons in the lateral septum play a crucial role in maintaining wakefulness and promoting emergence from anesthesia. Stimulation of these neurons led to increased wakefulness and accelerated recovery from anesthesia. Additionally, these GABAergic neurons inhibit the activity of ventral tegmental area GABAergic neurons, regulating wakefulness and depth of anesthesia.
