Density-by-Diet Interactions during Larval Development Shape Adult Life History Trait Expression and Fitness in a Polyphagous Fly

Juliano Morimoto et al.

Summary: The habitat quality in early life affects an individual's fitness and can have long-term evolutionary effects on groups and populations. In this study, researchers investigated the interactive effects of larval density and larval diet on adult fitness using the polyphagous fly Bactrocera tryoni. The results showed that a protein-rich diet led to faster larval development and heavier and leaner adults with higher reproductive rates. Surprisingly, adult lipid reserve increased with larval density in the sugar-rich diet group. These findings provide insights into how ecological factors during early life stages shape the fate of individuals in holometabolous insects.

Diet quality and conspecific larval density predict functional trait variation and performance in a polyphagous frugivorous fly

Carlos Pascacio-Villafan et al.

Summary: This study found that the macronutrient content in the larval diet and conspecific larval density have important effects on various traits of fruit fly larvae and adults. Large numbers of larvae feeding together can balance the negative effects of conspecific competition in high macronutrient content and low P/C ratio food.

Nutritional plasticity of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) in response to artificial diets varying in protein and carbohydrate concentrations

K. B. Barragan-Fonseca et al.

Summary: The concentration of protein and carbohydrate in food affects the performance of black soldier fly larvae and adults, with protein concentration being a limiting factor for most performance variables. A protein concentration between 10% and 15% and a carbohydrate concentration between 10% and 60% support high larval and adult performance. Different macronutrient concentrations significantly affect larval and adult performance in various ways, highlighting the flexibility in formulating diets to achieve optimal results.

Non-molting dwarf (nm-d) as a mutant of Bombyx mori with a defect in purine synthesis

Tsuguru Fujii et al.

Summary: Non-molting dwarf (nm-d) mutation in silkworm Bombyx mori is associated with a specific exon loss in the BmATIC gene, leading to a defect in purine biosynthesis in larvae. This gene is essential for proper larval development in lepidopteran insects.
