Surface modification of SiOx film anodes by laser annealing and improvement of cyclability for lithium-ion batteries

Zhichao Li et al.

Summary: SiOx film anodes with different oxygen content were prepared by RF-PECVD, and introducing oxygen can alleviate volume expansion in the charge/discharge process. Utilizing a KrF excimer laser system can induce the formation of nanoparticles on the SiO0.76 film surface, leading to a larger and mechanically robust SEI area, ultimately improving the cyclic stability of the lithium-ion battery.

Electrochemical activation of a diatom-derived SiO2/C composite anode and its implementation in a lithium ion battery

Viktor Renman et al.

Summary: Nano-architectured silica extracted from algae in the ocean is investigated as an anode material for lithium ion batteries, with a beneficial carbon coating formed by pyrolysis of glucose. The SiO2 and SiO2/C composites are characterized through various methods to verify structure, morphology, and composition. The activated SiO2/C composite shows high delithiation capacities in a LiPF6-carbonate electrolyte.

A polymer brush-based robust and flexible single-ion conducting artificial SEI film for fast charging lithium metal batteries

Junkui Zeng et al.

Summary: A novel superstructured single-ion conducting polymer brush (CNF-g-PSSLi) is proposed as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film to inhibit lithium dendrite growth, showing good mechanical properties and fast ionic transport. This work could provide an efficient attempt to develop superior artificial SEI films for practical application in lithium metal batteries.

Quantifying lithium loss in amorphous silicon thin-film anodes via titration-gas chromatography

Wurigumula Bao et al.

Summary: The continuous growth of the SEI is found to be the dominant factor for lithium inventory loss during cycling, with only a marginal increase in trapped Li-Si alloy. This study offers a quantitative approach to differentiate Li in the SEI from trapped Li in Li-Si alloy, providing unique insights into identifying critical bottlenecks for developing Si anodes.
