Circadian Control of Mitochondria in Reactive Oxygen Species Homeostasis

Volha Mezhnina et al.

Summary: This article discusses the role of the circadian clock and mitochondrial rhythms in maintaining ROS homeostasis. The circadian clock regulates mitochondrial functions, including nutrient flux, oxidation, antioxidant defense, and mitochondrial dynamics. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of circadian control of mitochondrial functions is essential in preventing metabolic diseases and delaying aging.

Extraction, Structural Characterization, and Immunomodulatory Activity of a High Molecular Weight Polysaccharide From Ganoderma lucidum

Guo Liu et al.

Summary: Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GLP) have excellent immunomodulatory activity. Among them, the high molecular weight Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RGLP) exhibits stronger immunomodulatory activity than the low molecular weight EGLP. Structural analysis reveals that RGLP-1 is a β-pyran polysaccharide with specific glycosyl bonds, showing potential immunomodulatory properties.

Structural characterization and hepatoprotective activity of an acidic polysaccharide from Ganoderma lucidum

Shaodan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, Ganoderma lucidum crude polysaccharide (GLP) was found to have a protective effect on liver damage caused by restraint stress in mice by improving oxidative status. Two polysaccharides, including a neutral beta-glucan (GLPB2) and an acidic beta-glucan (GLPC2), were purified from GLP. GLPC2 exhibited a stronger hepatoprotective effect compared to GLPB2. The findings provide a theoretical basis for the potential application of G. lucidum polysaccharides as hepatoprotective agents in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Enhancement of ganoderic acid production by promoting sporulation in a liquid static culture of Ganoderma species

Bin Sun et al.

Summary: Promoting sporulation in Ganoderma efficiently improves the production of ganoderic acids in liquid static cultures, with higher levels observed in spores compared to liquid cultures. Through this novel strategy, significant increases in GA content were achieved, indicating the potential for enhancing the application of Ganoderma-derived triterpenoids.

Interspecific hybridization as a driver of fungal evolution and adaptation

Jan Steensels et al.

Summary: Cross-species gene transfer can also occur in fungal species, leading to intertwined lineages and novel species. Unlike prokaryotes, fungal DNA exchange primarily originates from interspecific hybridization, resulting in highly unstable polyploid genomes that rapidly evolve into stable derivatives with novel genetic and phenotypic variations. Interspecific hybrids can colonize new niches and have been important in the emergence of human and plant pathogens as well as industrially useful yeasts. The study of fungal interspecific hybridization provides insights into evolution, adaptation, and speciation, with potential applications in industrial processes.
