Severe Sporotrichosis Treated with Amphotericin B: A 20-Year Cohort Study in an Endemic Area of Zoonotic Transmission

Vivian Fichman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of amphotericin B in the treatment of severe disseminated sporotrichosis. The results showed that amphotericin B is the first-choice treatment for disseminated sporotrichosis, although its response may be affected by the severity of systemic dissemination. Prompt diagnosis, investigation of fungal dissemination, and early therapy initiation are crucial for favorable clinical outcomes.

Clinical utility of antifungal susceptibility testing

Todd P. McCarty et al.

Summary: Invasive fungal diseases pose significant threats to immunocompromised patients, and the emergence of resistant organisms has heightened the importance of antifungal susceptibility testing. However, there are notable differences in the execution and interpretation of such testing compared to bacteria. This review highlights the strengths and limitations of resistance data for pathogenic yeasts and moulds, aiming to guide treatment and predict clinical outcomes.

Sixty years of Amphotericin B: An Overview of the Main Antifungal Agent Used to Treat Invasive Fungal Infections

Francelise B. Cavassin et al.

Summary: Polyenes, the oldest family of antifungal drugs introduced in the late 1950s, remain useful in the treatment of invasive fungal diseases due to their broad spectrum of activity, low resistance rate, and excellent clinical and pharmacological action despite their toxic potential. Focus has been placed on developing new products to minimize the known toxicity of the conventional drug.
