Breathomics: Review of Sample Collection and Analysis, Data Modeling and Clinical Applications

Maryam Khoubnasabjafari et al.

Summary: Metabolomics research, particularly in breathomics, is advancing rapidly in disease diagnosis, focusing on the collection and analysis methods of exhaled breath. Analyzing metabolites in exhaled breath is valuable for disease diagnosis, indicating the promising future of breathomics as a noninvasive discipline. Wide variations in reported metabolite concentrations from breathomics studies should be addressed with more accurate analytical methods and sophisticated numerical algorithms.

Addressing Missing Data in GC x GC Metabolomics: Identifying Missingness Type and Evaluating the Impact of Imputation Methods on Experimental Replication

Trenton J. Davis et al.

Summary: Missing data is a significant issue in metabolomics, and this study identifies the primary types of missingness and compares strategies for imputation using real-world data sets. The study introduces a within-replicate imputation approach and an R package for analysis. The results show the effectiveness of Gibbs sampler imputation and Random Forest for handling missing data types and suggest that within-replicate imputation improves peak quantification reproducibility for biomarker discovery.

Update on the Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Coccidioidomycosis

Samantha L. Williams et al.

Summary: Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii, with increasing incidence and expanding geographic distribution. Most infections are asymptomatic, but some cases can be severe. Diagnosis is challenging and relies on clinician suspicion for laboratory testing. Advances in diagnostic tools and antifungal therapy aim to improve early detection and effective management of the infection.

Volatiles of antagonistic soil yeasts inhibit growth and aflatoxin production of Aspergillus flavus

Subramani Natarajan et al.

Summary: In this study, soil yeast strains from the Western and Eastern Ghats of India were utilized to inhibit Aspergillus flavus growth and reduce aflatoxin contamination. Specific yeast strains were identified to have antagonistic activity against A. flavus, with the volatile compounds produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae showing the greatest inhibition. Benzothiazole was found to be the most effective compound in inhibiting fungal growth and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) production. Therefore, volatile compounds produced by soil yeast strains could potentially serve as a biocontrol mechanism against aflatoxin contamination.

Antioxidant and antibacterial potential of crude extract of soil fungus Periconia sp. (SSS-8)

S. Skanda et al.

Summary: The study screened nine soil fungi from Puttaparthi, India for antioxidant and antibacterial activities, and identified Periconia sp. (SSS-8) as having significant potential. SSS-8 displayed high DPPH free radical scavenging and promising antibacterial activity, making it a potential source for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

Life Cycle Dominates the Volatilome Character of Dimorphic Fungus Coccidioides spp.

Emily A. Higgins Keppler et al.

Summary: Valley fever is an endemic fungal pneumonia of the North and South American deserts, with current diagnostics lacking sensitivity. Research showed that the volatile metabolome of Coccidioides is more dependent on growth phase rather than species, and C. immitis and C. posadasii have strong similarities in their volatile profiles.

Interleukin-8 Receptor 2 (IL-8R2)-Deficient Mice Are More Resistant to Pulmonary Coccidioidomycosis than Control Mice

Aaron F. Carlin et al.

Summary: IL-8R2-deficient mice infected with Coccidioides immitis show decreased neutrophils in the lungs, lower organism count, higher expression of genes associated with lymphocyte activation, and increased levels of IL-17A and IFN-γ in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid, suggesting a potential role of neutrophils in interfering with the protective Th1/Th17 immune response to the infection.
