Metformin alleviates chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cigarette smoke extract-induced glucocorticoid resistance by activating the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 signaling pathway

Fulin Tao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of action of metformin (MET) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced glucocorticoid (GC) resistance. The results showed that MET improved lung function, reduced pathological injury, and decreased inflammation and oxidative stress levels in COPD. MET also upregulated the expression of specific genes. Additionally, MET reduced GC resistance.

Impact of smoking status and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on pulmonary complications post lung cancer surgery

Vishnu Jeganathan et al.

Summary: Smoking and COPD are associated with an increased risk of post-operative pulmonary complications (PPCs) following lung cancer resection. COPD, independent of smoking status, is also associated with an increased overall post-operative complication rate and length of hospital stay. Optimizing COPD treatment may help improve post-operative outcomes.

Early COPD Risk Decision for Adults Aged From 40 to 79 Years Based on Lung Radiomics Features

Yingjian Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the COPD risk for adults to make an early risk decision using lung radiomics features. The findings suggest that COPD patients need to take action to prevent disease progression and deterioration once they reach the age of 60. Precautions against COPD should be taken by patients with COPD stage 0 once they reach the age of 65.

Lung Cancer in the Course of COPD-Emerging Problems Today

Robert Ulinski et al.

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an independent risk factor for lung cancer, and both diseases share similarities in immunopathogenesis. Some elements of autoimmunity may be involved in the development of emphysema and its relation with malignant transformation. COPD complicates lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, and tobacco smoking remains the main cause of these tobacco-dependent diseases.

Involvement of inflammatory cytokines and epigenetic modification of the mtTFA complex in T-helper cells of patients? suffering from non-small cell lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Geetha Shanmugam et al.

Summary: Dysregulated inflammatory response plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Non-Small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This research aims to uncover the link between alterations in inflammatory cytokine levels and disease progression in CD4+T cells of patients suffering from COPD and lung cancer. The findings highlight the need for epigenetic therapy for these debilitating lung diseases.

Inflammatory Endotype-associated Airway Microbiome in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Clinical Stability and Exacerbations A Multicohort Longitudinal Analysis

Zhang Wang et al.

Summary: Analyzing the airway microbiome can help stratify neutrophilic COPD into subgroups that require different treatment approaches. Patients with neutrophilic COPD are susceptible to significant microbiome shifts during exacerbations, especially those in a stable state at baseline. Monitoring the temporal variability of the airway microbiome may provide insight into patient inflammatory status over time.

Aberrant Post-Transcriptional Regulation of Protein Expression in the Development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory disorder characterized by chronic inflammation and emphysema, primarily caused by cigarette smoke. Various cellular processes are altered by cigarette smoke, including post-transcriptional regulation of mRNAs. RNA-binding proteins, microRNAs, and long non-coding RNAs play key roles in regulating RNA biology and may contribute to the pathogenesis of COPD.

Anjali Trivedi et al.

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant global concern due to its morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play a crucial role in COPD, with excessive formation contributing to tissue destruction, impaired pulmonary function, and disease progression. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of NET formation is essential for managing COPD and controlling disease exacerbations.

Summary: Small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) is an aggressive, poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma that accounts for 13% of all lung carcinomas. The Cumulative Effect of Gene-Gene Interactions Between GSTM1, CHRNA3, CHRNA5 and SOD3 Gene Polymorphisms Combined with Smoking on COPD Risk

Chimedlkhamsuren Ganbold et al.

Summary: This study investigated the gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in COPD development using genotyping and multidimensional regression analysis. Specific gene polymorphisms were found to contribute independently to COPD risk, while combinations of risk genotypes increased disease vulnerability. The cumulative effect of multiple risk polymorphisms, especially in interaction with smoking, significantly elevated the risk of developing COPD.

Small airway determinants of airflow limitation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Vasiliy V. Polosukhin et al.

Summary: In patients with COPD, thickening of epithelial and subepithelial tissue, mucus plugging, reduced collagen density in the airway wall, and loss of radial alveolar attachments were associated with airflow limitation. The major determinant of airflow limitation related to small airways was found to be the loss of alveolar attachments, which may be mediated by neutrophilic inflammation. Additionally, quantitative analysis of CT scans found an association between the extent of emphysema and loss of alveolar attachments.
