Levels of Breast Milk MicroRNAs and Other Non-Coding RNAs Are Impacted by Milk Maturity and Maternal Diet

Steven D. Hicks et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that non-coding RNAs in maternal breast milk have unique effects on the metabolism and immune system of infants. This study provides the largest dataset of non-coding RNAs in breast milk and demonstrates a relationship between microRNAs in breast milk and maternal diet.

Longitudinal Human Milk miRNA Composition over the First 3 mo of Lactation in a Cohort of Healthy Mothers Delivering Term Infants

Frederic Raymond et al.

Summary: This study characterized the longitudinal profile of miRNAs in human milk between the second week and the third month postpartum. The study detected 685 miRNAs, of which 35 showed a high and stable expression along the lactation period analyzed. Additionally, a set of 11 miRNAs with a dynamic expression profile was described for the first time. In vitro experiments also provided support for the hypothesized mother-to-neonate signaling role of human milk miRNAs.

Detection and Quantification of Immunoregulatory miRNAs in Human Milk and Infant Milk Formula

Summary: This study examined the expression levels of immunomodulatory miRNAs in human milk and found that the relative expression levels were comparable among milk samples and higher than in infant milk formula.

Associations between maternal lifetime stressors and negative events in pregnancy and breast milk-derived extracellular vesicle microRNAs in the programming of intergenerational stress mechanisms (PRISM) pregnancy cohort

Anne K. Bozack et al.

Summary: Maternal lifetime stress and negative life events during pregnancy are associated with detection and expression levels of breast milk extracellular vesicle microRNAs. These microRNAs are linked to biological pathways such as fatty acid metabolism and the Hippo signaling pathway. Further research is needed to identify the impact of these microRNAs on child health outcomes.

Human milk extracellular vesicle miRNA expression and associations with maternal characteristics in a population-based cohort from the Faroe Islands

Allison Kupsco et al.

Summary: Human milk extracellular vesicles (EVs) containing microRNAs (miRNAs) play a critical role in infant cognitive, immune, and cardiometabolic functions. The expression of many top-cluster human milk EV-miRNAs is highly correlated, and they are involved in pathways related to the endocrine system, cellular community, neurodevelopment, and cancers. Further studies are needed to elucidate the determinants of human milk EV-miRNAs and their impact on health outcomes.

Human Milk Exosomal MicroRNA: Associations with Maternal Overweight/Obesity and Infant Body Composition at 1 Month of Life

Kruti B. Shah et al.

Summary: Breast milk is a rich source of microRNAs, specifically miRNAs. This study aimed to investigate the impact of maternal overweight/obesity on select miRNAs related to adipogenesis and glucose metabolism, and their relationship with infant body composition. The findings showed that miR-148a and miR-30b were significantly lower in overweight/obese mothers compared to normal-weight mothers at 1 month, with associations between these miRNAs and infant weight and body composition.

Evaluation of five column-based isolation kits and their ability to extract miRNA from human milk

Emelie Ahlberg et al.

Summary: MicroRNA can be transferred from mother to infant via breast milk and potentially regulate the development of the infant's immune system. The study evaluated the efficiency of five RNA extraction kits from human skim milk samples, with one kit being found as the most appropriate for microRNA extraction. Further research is needed to establish a standardized protocol for microRNA extraction from breast milk.

Comparative analysis of dietary exosome-derived microRNAs from human, bovine and caprine colostrum and mature milk

Bohyun Yun et al.

Summary: This study found that mammalian milk contains microRNAs, which play a key role in immune regulation and development. The research revealed that these miRNAs are highly conserved across human, bovine, and caprine milk, with immune-related miRNAs being commonly observed in all three species, providing new insights into the potential use of miRNAs as biomarkers for physiological and biological conditions in human, bovine, and caprine milk.
