20 Years of ICF-International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Uses and Applications around the World

Matilde Leonardi et al.

Summary: The International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) has gained increased interest in various sectors since its approval in 2001. Most countries primarily use ICF in clinical practice, policy development, and education areas. Although ICF is applied in different sectors, it is not mandatory in most countries.

Physiotherapist-led rehabilitation for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain: interventions and promising long-term outcomes

Anna Trulsson Schouenborg et al.

Summary: The study describes a physiotherapist-led rehabilitation program for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, resulting in clinically relevant improvements in pain, disability, and overall health. The findings suggest that approximately half of the patients demonstrated clinically important improvements at the 1-year follow-up.

Laying the foundation for a Core Set of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for community-dwelling older adults in primary care: relevant categories of their functioning from the research perspective, a scoping review

Johanna Tomandl et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to identify relevant concepts of functioning in community-dwelling older adults within frequently used assessment instruments. A scoping review was conducted to extract concepts and link them to the ICF, with a focus on 'activities and participation'. Results showed that 'memory functions', 'dressing', and 'changing basic body position' were the most frequently identified categories. This review will be used to develop an ICF Core Set for older primary care patients.

Effectiveness of Internet-Based Exercises Aimed at Treating Knee Osteoarthritis The iBEAT-OA Randomized Clinical Trial

Sameer Akram Gohir et al.

Summary: The study showed that internet-based treatment for knee osteoarthritis was more effective than routine self-management care, without causing harm to arthritis patients. The intervention group experienced significant improvements in pain relief, physical function, and muscle strength compared to the control group.

Experience of the COVID-19 pandemic as lived by patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis: an Italian qualitative study

Simone Battista et al.

Summary: The study reveals the challenges faced by people with hip and knee osteoarthritis in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic, including limited social interactions and restricted access to healthcare services. Despite these difficulties, participants showed a positive attitude towards coping with the situation. It also highlights the importance of policy-making strategies to raise awareness about the significance of first-line interventions for osteoarthritis.

Effectiveness and Quality of Implementing a Best Practice Model of Care for Low Back Pain (BetterBack) Compared with Routine Care in Physiotherapy: A Hybrid Type 2 Trial

Karin Schroder et al.

Summary: The implementation of BetterBack MoC did not show significant differences in primary outcomes compared to routine care, but the intervention group had higher satisfaction, improved illness perception, and quality of life. Adhering to clinical practice quality indices as a physiotherapist resulted in improved patient outcomes, highlighting the importance of guideline-based primary care for low back pain.

Progressive exercise compared with best-practice advice, with or without corticosteroid injection, for rotator cuff disorders: the GRASP factorial RCT

Sally Hopewell et al.

Summary: This study compared the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of progressive exercise with best-practice physiotherapy advice, with or without corticosteroid injections, in adults with rotator cuff disorders. The results showed that progressive exercise alone was not superior to a single best-practice advice session with a physiotherapist. Corticosteroid injections improved shoulder pain and function in the short term, but did not provide long-term benefits over 12 months. Best-practice advice combined with corticosteroid injections was expected to be the most cost-effective treatment option, although there was uncertainty.

Effectiveness of App-Delivered, Tailored Self-management Support for Adults With Lower Back Pain-Related Disability A SELFBACK Randomized Clinical Trial

Louise Fleng Sandal et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a self-management support tool delivered through a smartphone app as an adjunct to usual care for adults with lower back pain-related disability. Results showed that participants who used the selfBACK system had reduced pain-related disability at 3 months, but the improvement may be too small to be clinically significant.

Summary: IASP has recently released new clinical criteria for nociplastic pain affecting the musculoskeletal system, aiming to help clinicians identify and classify patients with chronic pain more accurately. These new criteria are more comprehensive and robust, representing important steps towards precision pain medicine, although further studies are needed to validate their clinimetric and psychometric properties.
