Prognostic accuracy of FIB-4, NAFLD fibrosis score and APRI for NAFLD-related events: A systematic review

Jenny Lee et al.

Summary: This study synthesized the existing literature on the ability of FIB-4, NFS, and APRI models in prognosticating NAFLD-related events. The results showed that these models have demonstrated good ability to risk stratify patients for liver-related morbidity and mortality, with inconsistent performance in predicting change in fibrosis stage. Further head-to-head studies are needed to validate their performance and refine models for prognosticating NAFLD events.

Hepatocellular carcinoma

Josep M. Llovet et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), poses a significant global health challenge with rising incidence projected to exceed 1 million cases by 2025. Infection by hepatitis B and C viruses remains a major risk factor for HCC, while non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is emerging as a more common risk factor in Western countries. Advances in systemic therapies for HCC, including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, are expected to revolutionize the management of this disease.

Liver cirrhosis

Pere Gines et al.

Summary: Cirrhosis is a widespread disease with various causes, leading to portal hypertension, systemic inflammation, and liver failure. Early diagnosis and management of complications are crucial to prevent progression to decompensated cirrhosis. Liver transplantation may be necessary in severe cases.

Liver Fibrosis Index FIB-4 Is Associated With Mortality in COVID-19

Yijia Li et al.

Summary: The study found that FIB-4 score is associated with mortality in COVID-19 hospitalized patients, with each unit increase in FIB-4 score linked to higher risk of death. FIB-4 score peaked and then normalized in the survivor group but failed to do so in the deceased group. Furthermore, FIB-4 was positively correlated with SARS-CoV-2 viral load and monocyte-associated cytokines, particularly interleukin-6 and interferon gamma-induced protein 10.

FIB-4 index-based surveillance for advanced liver fibrosis in diabetes patients

Nozomi Kawata et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a FIB-4 index-based screening strategy for diagnosing advanced liver fibrosis in patients with diabetes, showing significantly higher prevalence of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with high FIB-4 index. The FIB-4 index demonstrated high accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity in diagnosing liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma, with an optimized cut-off value providing useful information for identifying these conditions in diabetic patients.
