Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Implementation of an adapted Sepsis Risk Calculator algorithm to reduce antibiotic usage in the management of early onset neonatal sepsis: a multicentre initiative in Wales, UK

Nitin Goel et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of introducing a consensus guideline with an adapted Sepsis Risk Calculator algorithm in managing early onset neonatal sepsis. The results showed a significant reduction in antibiotic usage without increasing morbidity and mortality in infants with true sepsis.

Summary: This study examined medication prescribing patterns in US neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) from 2010 to 2018. The results showed that there were significant changes in medication use over time, with some medications experiencing a relative increase in use while others experienced a relative decrease.

A global point prevalence survey of antimicrobial use in neonatal intensive care units: The no-more-antibiotics and resistance (NO-MAS-R) study

Pavel Prusakov et al.

Summary: Global assessment reveals a high prevalence of antimicrobial use among infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), with the majority receiving antibiotics and for prolonged durations. Treatment durations for culture-positive and culture-negative infections are 12 days and 7 days, respectively. NICU-specific Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) are associated with lower antibiotic utilization rates.
