Postoperative Opioid Prescribing and New Persistent Opioid Use The Risk of Excessive Prescribing

Ryan Howard et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between postoperative opioid prescribing and new persistent opioid use. The results showed that the quantity of opioids prescribed after surgery was associated with new persistent opioid use, indicating that excessive prescribing increases the risk of long-term opioid use.

Impacts of Initial Prescription Length and Prescribing Limits on Risk of Prolonged Postsurgical Opioid Use

Jessica C. Young et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between the length of initial opioid prescription and the risk of prolonged opioid use, as well as the potential impact of prescribing limits. The results showed a monotonic increase in the risk of prolonged use with longer prescription duration. Commonly used day supply limits may have a limited impact on reducing prolonged opioid use cases. Any prescribing limits should be balanced with the need for adequate pain management.

The Association Between Preoperative Opioid Exposure and Prolonged Postoperative Use

Charles Katzman et al.

Summary: The study showed that patients with nonchronic, periodic preoperative opioid use are more likely to have prolonged postoperative opioid use. Identifying opioid use before surgery presents a critical opportunity to optimize care after surgery.

Advanced Practice Providers Utilization Trends in Otolaryngology From 2012 to 2017 in the Medicare Population

Marshall Ge et al.

Summary: From 2012 to 2017, there was a 51% increase in the number of otolaryngology APPs, compared to a 2.2% increase in physician providers. APPs increased their share of new and established patient visits, and performed more procedures over time. The increase in number of APP vs physician providers was significantly greater for every procedure except for balloon sinus dilation and tympanostomy tube placement.

The added value of the advanced practice provider in paediatric acute care cardiology

Amanda J. Willis et al.

Summary: By utilizing the PAC(3) hospital survey, the study evaluated the impact of APP staffing models on programme volume, acuity of care, and post-operative length of stay. Findings indicated a positive correlation between the number of employed APPs, surgical volume, and patient acuity, with higher APP coverage associated with shorter-than-expected post-operative LOS.
