Healthy lifestyles, genetic modifiers, and colorectal cancer risk: a prospective cohort study in the UK Biobank

Jungyoon Choi et al.

Summary: The study found a correlation between healthier lifestyles and reduced risk of colorectal cancer, with a more significant risk reduction observed among individuals with high genetic susceptibility. Although no multiplicative interactions were identified, a significant additive interaction was found between lifestyle scores and genetic risk scores.

Evaluation of modifiable factors and polygenic risk score in thyroid cancer

Tung Hoang et al.

Summary: This study found that in the Korean population, family history, obesity, and polygenic risk score (PRS) were directly related to susceptibility to thyroid cancer, while the impact of smoking, drinking, and regular exercise was not significant. The contribution of the PRS to thyroid cancer risk remained after stratifying participants according to healthy behavioral strategies.

Changes in Smoking, Alcohol Consumption, and the Risk of Thyroid Cancer: A Population-Based Korean Cohort Study

Yohwan Yeo et al.

Summary: Observational studies suggest an inverse association between smoking, alcohol intake, and thyroid cancer incidence. The study in Korea found that non-smokers who initiated smoking had a decreased risk of thyroid cancer, while heavy smokers who quit had an increased risk. There was no significant association between changes in drinking status and thyroid cancer risk.

Genetic Risk for Overall Cancer and the Benefit of Adherence to a Healthy Lifestyle

Meng Zhu et al.

Summary: Cancer site-specific polygenic risk scores can effectively identify individuals at high risk of individual cancers. By using an incidence-weighted overall cancer polygenic risk score, individuals at high genetic risk of overall cancer can be identified and the risk can be attenuated by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Actions of Thyroid Hormones on Thyroid Cancers

Shaker A. Mousa et al.

Summary: The thyroid hormone receptor on integrin alpha v beta 3 mediates the stimulatory effects of T4 on cancer cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and platelet coagulation. The pro-thrombotic activity of T4 on platelets may support cancer-linked blood clotting and contribute to tumor cell metastasis. Studies have shown that T4 and its derivative tetraiodothyroacetic acid (tetrac) modulate gene expression in thyroid cancer cells, with potential implications for cancer treatment.
