The transcription factor hepatocyte nuclear factor 4A acts in the intestine to promote white adipose tissue energy storage

Romain Girard et al.

Summary: The transcription factor HNF4A plays a key role in controlling the metabolic features of several endodermal epithelia. This study reveals that intestinal HNF4A is not required for intestinal lipid metabolism, but unexpectedly influences whole-body energy expenditure in diet-induced obesity. Intestinal HNF4A is crucial for the fat-induced release of GIP, which regulates energy expenditure and plays a non-redundant role in whole-body lipid homeostasis. This research provides new insights into the regulatory circuit for body-fat management.
