Refilling strategy of crosslinked aromatic SAMs for enhancing the molecular packing density

M. Alsalama et al.

Summary: The stability and uniform coverage of molecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on metal substrates is crucial for device integration. Electron irradiation-induced intermolecular crosslinking is one strategy to enhance the stability of SAMs. In this study, biphenyl-4-4-thiol molecules were densely packed into SAMs after electron radiation, and nitrogen atoms in 4'-Mercapto-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbonitrile molecules were used as markers to estimate the reduction of SAM coverage area. The experimental results were supported by density functional theory calculations, and the findings can be important for creating stable molecular SAM devices using an alternating irradiation and refilling procedure.

Self-assembled monolayers for interface engineering in polymer solar cells

Jie Hu et al.

Summary: Polymer solar cells (PSCs) have been developed extensively in the past decade due to their advantages of low cost, lightweight, mechanical flexibility, versatility of chemical design and synthesis, semitransparency, and solution processing. The performance and lifetime of PSCs depend on the properties of active materials and interfaces. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of organic molecules can control the electronic and chemical properties at inorganic-organic interfaces. This review discusses the application of SAMs in PSCs at different interfaces and highlights their potential for improving the stability and performance of PSCs.
