Smartphone-based screening for atrial fibrillation: a pragmatic randomized clinical trial

Summary: The study compared the efficacy of digital smart devices in detecting atrial fibrillation (AF) and found that digital screening technology more than doubled the detection rate of treatment-relevant AF compared to usual care. This technology has the potential for broad applicability and further studies are needed to assess if digital screening for AF leads to better treatment outcomes.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an e-health-based strategy for atrial fibrillation detection in a real-world setting, compared to routine symptom-based screening. Approximately 67,488 policyholders of a large German health insurance company aged 50 and older with a CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score of 1 or higher are invited to participate in this digital, prospective, randomized, siteless, open-label, cross-over study.
