In vitro and in vivo assessment of the effect of biodegradable magnesium alloys on osteogenesis

Ding Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the degradation behavior, biocompatibility, and osteogenic effect of pure Mg, Mg-3Zn, and Mg-2Zn-1Mn alloys in both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Mg-2Zn-1Mn exhibited higher corrosion resistance and more stable degradation behavior compared to pure Mg and Mg-3Zn. The extracts of the three materials showed a significant stimulating effect on osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) along with non-cytotoxicity.

N-carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate composite hydrogel loading plasmid DNA as a promising gene activated matrix for in-situ burn wound treatment

Litong Wang et al.

Summary: Improving the degree of vascularization through the regulation of wound microenvironment is crucial for wound repair. Gene activated matrix (GAM) technology provides a new approach for skin regeneration. Research has found that the mVEGF165/TGF-beta(1) gene-loaded hydrogel can effectively promote deep second degree burn wound repair, with long-term gene release and expression effect, leading to neovascularization and tissue regeneration.

Enhancing the mechanical properties and cytocompatibility of magnesium potassium phosphate cement by incorporating oxygen-carboxymethyl chitosan

Changtian Gong et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed a composite bone cement with excellent bioactivity and mechanical properties by incorporating oxygen-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) into magnesium potassium phosphate cement. The introduction of O-CMC increased the compressive strength and setting time of the material, while reducing porosity and pH value, resulting in improved cytocompatibility for bone regeneration.

An update on magnesium and bone health

Mariangela Rondanelli et al.

Summary: There is a causal relationship between magnesium and bone health, with low serum magnesium levels being associated with osteoporosis in around 30-40% of subjects. Many people consume lower levels of magnesium than recommended, and supplementation with magnesium in the form of citrate, carbonate, or oxide has been shown to improve bone mineral density and reduce fracture risk.
