Polysaccharides and Their Derivatives as Potential Antiviral Molecules

Hadrien Claus-Desbonnet et al.

Summary: In the current COVID-19 pandemic, the scientific resources and medical community appear to be insufficient in combating the rapid global spread of viruses. Several epidemics caused by different viruses, such as dengue, chinkungunya, Ebola, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV, have occurred worldwide in recent years, highlighting the difficulty in treating an epidemic before the availability of vaccines. Existing antiviral drugs have limitations, including side effects and decreased effectiveness due to virus mutations. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new antiviral strategies using natural compounds, and polysaccharides have emerged as attractive candidates due to their therapeutic properties, low toxicity, and availability.

Hyaluronic acid bisphosphonates as antifouling antimicrobial coatings for PEO-modified titanium implants

Lyudmila Parfenova et al.

Summary: The work focuses on developing biocompatible coatings using hyaluronic acid derivatives for modifying the surface of titanium. The synthesis of hyaluronic acid derivatives was achieved through oxidation and reaction with maleimides. Organic molecules were deposited onto the titanium surface through physicochemical adsorption. The coatings showed increased hydrophilicity and exhibited inhibitory effects on cell viability and bacterial adhesion.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using rapidly dissolving MNs based on PVP and HA for ocular delivery of poorly soluble AMP-B. The MN arrays showed good mechanical strength, high solubility, and enhanced AMP-B penetration through corneal layers, while also reducing cytotoxicity compared to free drug. Furthermore, the biocompatible MN formulations preserved the antifungal activity of AMP-B, inhibiting fungal growth significantly.
