Recent advances in in-process characterization of suspensions and slurries

David M. Scott

Summary: A comprehensive literature review explores new and emerging methods for in-process characterization of suspensions and slurries. The review highlights a number of innovative and significant developments, including characterization at higher concentrations, inline rheometry, phase distribution measurement, increased size resolution and dynamic range for bi-modal distributions, and spatially-resolved measurement of nanoparticle size in flow. The review also provides a methods selection guide to facilitate the adoption of these techniques.

Characterizing Ensembles of Platelike Particles via Machine Learning

Anna Jaeggi et al.

Summary: The study presents the characterization of platelike particles using a dual projection imaging device and evaluates different methods to estimate their lengths, showing that method 3 achieves the highest accuracy. The remaining error is identified to be mainly caused by alignment issues, affecting the distinguishability of platelets from quasi-equant particles.

Growth of Abraded Crystals Tracked in Three Dimensions

Simon A. Schiele et al.

Summary: The interaction between crystal growth and abrasion was studied by tracking the growth of abraded potash alum crystals in three dimensions using micro-computed tomography. It was found that abraded regions grew faster than crystal faces, leading to ideally facetted crystals. The growth rates in all directions were used to parametrize a growth model to describe the size and shape evolution of abraded potash alum crystals in three dimensions.

Analysis of Nonideal Shape Evolution during Potash Alum Crystallization Using Microcomputed Tomography and Three-Dimensional Image Analysis

Simon A. Schiele et al.

Summary: The article presents a method for more detailed analysis of crystallization processes and crystal morphology using three-dimensional image analysis. It characterizes the morphology of crystals through parameters such as particle volume and surface area distributions. Experimental results show that most crystals exhibit nonideal shapes during crystal growth processes.

Experimental Investigation of an Integrated Crystallization and Wet-Milling System with Temperature Cycling to Control the Size and Aspect Ratio of Needle-Shaped Pharmaceutical Crystals

Ayse Eren et al.

Summary: Control of crystal size distribution and shape is crucial in the pharmaceutical industries to meet critical quality attribute requirements. This study demonstrates the systematic design of a crystallization process for an API with challenges related to slow growth rates and high AR crystals. Application of immersion milling and temperature cycles to control crystal shape and size provides a pathway to achieve low AR and sufficiently large crystals.
