A Single-Layer Composite Separator with 3D-Reinforced Microstructure for Practical High-Temperature Lithium Ion Batteries

Botao Yuan et al.

Summary: The incorporation of ceramic materials into separators is a commonly used method to enhance the high-temperature performance of lithium ion batteries. However, the aggregation and detachment of ceramic particles in the separator matrix can decrease the porosity of the separator and degrade battery performance. In this study, a core-shell architecture is designed to strengthen the polymer matrix by encircling Al2O3 particles with poly(vinylidene fluoride), resulting in improved pore distribution and thermal stability. The proposed separator microstructure exhibits excellent performance even at commercial thickness values, providing a promising strategy for stable lithium ion batteries at high temperatures.
