Mitigating the Large-Volume Phase Transition of P2-Type Cathodes by Synergetic Effect of Multiple Ions for Improved Sodium-Ion Batteries

Zhiwei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy based on the synergetic effect of multiple selected metal ions to improve the performance of P2-type cathodes. The results demonstrate that the contribution of multi-metal ions converts the unfavorable and large-volume phase transition into a moderate structure, leading to enhanced electrode performance. The P2-Na0.7Li0.03Mg0.03Ni0.27Mn0.6Ti0.07O2 composite electrode exhibits high reversible capacity, cycling stability, and rate performance, and the full cell with a hard carbon anode achieves a high energy density.

Phase tuning of P2/O3-type layered oxide cathode for sodium ion batteries via a simple Li/F co-doping route

Zhengbo Liu et al.

Summary: Element doping is a common method for improving the performance of cathode materials in batteries. This study successfully transformed an O3-type cathode into a P2-type cathode using a simple Li/F co-doping route. The modified P2-type cathode showed higher Na content, solid solution reaction in a high-voltage range, and a stronger TM-F bond. This research provides a new idea and reference for synthesizing high-performance P2-type layered oxide cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Tuning local chemistry of P2 layered-oxide cathode for high energy and long cycles of sodium-ion battery

Chenchen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a layered P2-Na0.612K0.056MnO2 with large-sized K+ riveted in the Na-layers enables 0.9 Na+ (de)insertion with a reversible phase transition of P2-P'2. This cathode material demonstrates the highest specific capacity and energy density based on the redox of Mn3+/Mn4+, with high capacity retention after 100 cycles. This research provides insights into tunable chemical environments of transition-metal oxides for advanced cathode materials and promotes the development of sodium-ion batteries. High capacity and structural stable cathode materials remain challenges for sodium-ion batteries.
