Experiments on aerothermoelastic fluid-structure interaction in hypersonic flow

Dennis Daub et al.

Summary: Aerothermoelastic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is a crucial problem in the design of supersonic and hypersonic vehicles. Insufficient treatment of FSI can limit design options and lead to damage or loss of vehicles. Through experimental research, we found that the dynamics of the coupled system are strongly dependent on small temperature changes.

What Kinds of Functions Do Deep Neural Networks Learn? Insights from Variational Spline Theory\ast

Rahul Parhi et al.

Summary: We develop a variational framework to understand the properties of functions learned by fitting deep neural networks with ReLU activations to data. By introducing a new function space, we capture the compositional structure associated with deep neural networks and derive a representer theorem for ReLU networks. The solutions have skip connections, rank-bounded weight matrices, and emphasize the role of sparsity. Our analysis provides new connections between deep neural networks and splines.

Summary: This paper introduces a potential method for detecting future damage indicators using extrapolation of Auto-Regressive models, evaluating data-driven models with multiple AR models to predict the time series outputs of PZT sensors receiving Lamb waves, and confirming the effectiveness of the method on an aeronautical composite panel.

Experiments on a Thin Panel Excited by Turbulent Flow and Shock/Boundary-Layer Interactions

Kirk R. Brouwer et al.

Summary: An experimental methodology was designed to study the effects of turbulent flow and shock/boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) on the postflutter response of a thin, buckled panel. The study combined systematic testing with state-of-the-art full-field, noncontact measurement techniques to characterize the loading conditions and structural response. The results showed that under turbulent flow conditions, the panel experienced bistable, cross-well oscillations, transitioning to periodic response as temperature differential decreased. Additionally, shock-induced limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) were measured using DIC for the first time, with the dynamic response centered around the three-quarter chord and transitioning as the strength of SBLI varied.
