Peripheral blood gene expression profiling shows predictive significance for response to mycophenolate in systemic sclerosis-related interstitial lung disease

Shervin Assassi et al.

Summary: The study characterized gene expression changes in peripheral blood cells (PBC) from systemic sclerosis-related interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) patients treated with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) or cyclophosphamide (CYC). The results showed that baseline lymphoid lineage modules predicted better forced vital capacity (FVC) course in MMF-treated patients, while baseline myeloid lineage and inflammation modules predicted worse FVC course. The study highlights the importance of baseline transcript scores in predicting treatment response in SSc-ILD patients.

Trends in Systemic Sclerosis Mortality Over Forty-Eight Years, 1968-2015: A US Population-Based Study

Eric Y. Yen et al.

Summary: This study identified long-term trends in systemic sclerosis (SSc) mortality: from 1968 to 2015, the SSc mortality rate increased, with higher rates among women and Black individuals in comparison to men and White individuals. However, starting from 2001, the SSc mortality rate decreased annually.

Toward Understanding of Environmental Risk Factors in Systemic Sclerosis

Lydia Ouchene et al.

Summary: Occupational and/or environmental exposures to silica and organic solvents are associated with increased incidence and severity of SSc. Limited data suggest that exposure to epoxy resins, asbestos, and particulate air pollution may also favor increased risk of SSc. However, the association between SSc development and other occupational or personal exposures remains inconclusive. On the other hand, the association between SSc and silicone breast implants has been disproven.

Convolutional Neural Networks for Differential Diagnosis of Raynaud's Phenomenon Based on Hands Thermal Patterns

Chiara Filippini et al.

Summary: Raynaud's phenomenon is a microvascular disorder causing transient ischemia, which can be associated with connective tissue diseases. Differential diagnosis between primary RP and RP secondary to systemic sclerosis is essential for proper therapeutic management. The use of thermal infrared imaging, along with a deep convolutional neural network, shows promising results in differentiating between these conditions.

New methods based on back propagation (BP) and radial basis function (RBF) artificial neural networks (ANNs) for predicting the occurrence of haloketones in tap water

Ying Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of different prediction models for estimating the occurrence of haloketones in water supply systems. The results showed that RBF and BP artificial neural networks outperformed linear/log linear models in terms of prediction ability, with RBF ANN demonstrating the capability to recognize complex nonlinear relationships between haloketones occurrence and water quality.

Impact of COVID-19 on GDP of major economies: Application of the artificial neural network forecaster

Pradyot Ranjan Jena et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused global health impacts and disruptions in economic activities, leading to sharp declines in GDP for all countries. A multilayer artificial neural network model is developed to forecast the GDP figures for the April-June quarter of 2020 for eight countries, with forecasting accuracy of less than 2% achieved during testing. Urgent rescue actions by governments are needed to address the alarming prospects of double-digit negative growth rates in annualized GDP growth.
