Soybean crop incorporation in irrigated rice cultivation improves nitrogen availability, soil microbial diversity and activity, and growth of ryegrass

Filipe Selau Carlos et al.

Summary: The genetic improvement of soybean cultivars more adapted to lowlands and new drainage technologies have led to the increased cultivation of soybean in rotation with irrigated rice in South America. The study found that soybean cultivation resulted in greater mineral N availability, higher extracellular enzyme activity, and microbial diversity compared to irrigated rice. These changes had a direct impact on the development of ryegrass plants, which exhibited higher dry biomass production.

Soil acidification and loss of base cations in a subtropical agricultural watershed

Yue Dong et al.

Summary: Soil acidification and base cation loss are significant problems in the subtropical red soil region of China, particularly in agroecosystems with high nitrogen fertilization. This study assessed the current status and future risk of soil acidification in a typical agricultural watershed using a two-year monitoring approach. The results showed that while significant soil acidification occurred, surface water acidification was minor, indicating the buffer capacity of the soils. However, there was a substantial loss of base cations, depleting the exchangeable pool in the watershed and posing a serious threat to soil recovery from acidification.

A long-term no-tillage system can increase enzymatic activity and maintain bacterial richness in paddy fields

Filipe Selau Carlos et al.

Summary: Soil management systems have a significant impact on microbial enzymatic activity and diversity. After 22 years, no-tillage was found to increase microbial biomass and enzyme activity, indicating its effectiveness in recovering irrigated rice areas with degraded soil microbiology. No-tillage also maintained bacterial richness despite the high enzyme activity levels.

Summary: This study synthesized data on the contribution of plant- and microbial-derived compounds to stabilized SOM, indicating different proportions of contribution between plant and microbial compounds in different ecosystems. Plant biomolecules were found to play a significant role in stabilizing organic matter.

Changes in soil phosphorus pools induced by drainage in tropical peatlands: Evidence in monoculture and intercropping long-term systems

Jose de Souza Oliveira Filho et al.

Summary: The study found that drainage primarily alters the inorganic fractions of phosphorus, with little impact on the organic fractions; the intercropped system reduces soil phosphorus content in the short term and presents risks of total depletion of phosphorus in the soil with excessive use.
