Microplastics in mangroves and coral reef ecosystems: a review

Juliana John et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution has emerged as a significant threat to ecosystem health, particularly impacting sensitive ecosystems like mangroves and coral reefs. Urbanization and industrial activities have led to contamination of these preserved ecosystems, highlighting the importance of mitigating measures to prevent microplastics from entering marine environments.

Landward zones of mangroves are sinks for both land and water borne anthropogenic debris

Ying Y. Luo et al.

Summary: The hotspots for mangrove diversity and plastic emissions from rivers overlap in Asia, but there have been few studies on anthropogenic marine debris pollution in these threatened coastal ecosystems. This study investigated the abundance of debris in 18 mangrove forests in Hong Kong and found that plastic accounted for the majority of debris, followed by disposable food packaging, fishing gear, and industrial and construction waste. The results suggest that landward areas of mangrove forests act as traps for marine debris, and direct dumping of waste from the land could have a significant impact on these forests.

Study of microplastics pollution in sediments and organisms in mangrove forests: A review

Zeinab Maghsodian et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a emerging pollutant that can enter marine environments like mangrove forests and interfere with the health of the environment and organisms. The concentration of microplastics in sediments is high and fiber and bright color microplastic particles are more common. In addition, mangrove forests exposed to fishing, coastal tourism, urban, and industrial wastewater have higher concentrations of microplastics.

Litter in coastal and marine environments

Nelson Rangel-Buitrago et al.

Summary: Litter is a pervasive environmental problem in coastal and marine environments, alongside climate change. This collection of 37 papers focuses on the types, sources, impacts, and solutions of litter, while emphasizing the need for global governance to effectively address the magnitude of litter pollution.

Seasonal and geographic variations of marine litter: A comprehensive study from the island of Cyprus

Demetra L. Orthodoxou et al.

Summary: This study monitored twenty beaches around Cyprus to assess the amount, categories, and distribution of marine litter. The findings showed that the majority of collected litter items were plastics, particularly single-use plastics. Plastic fragments larger than 2.5 cm were abundant, especially on the northern coasts of the island. Cigarette butts were also frequently found on touristic beaches. The study identified significant temporal and spatial variations in the abundance and distribution of marine litter, which were related to waste management practices.

Where does marine litter hide? The Providencia and Santa Catalina Island problem, SEAFLOWER Reserve (Colombia)

Luana Portz et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the distribution and potential sources of solid waste in different marine/coastal ecosystems of SEAFLOWER Biosphere Reserve (SBR) and assess the interconnections between these ecosystems. The findings reveal that mangroves and back-beach vegetation serve as crucial accumulation zones for marine litter, while tourist beaches have low litter density due to regular clean-ups. Additionally, the low density of litter found on corals suggests no significant litter stream to the coral reefs at present.

Preliminary Microbiological Coastal Water Quality Determination along the Department of Atlantico (Colombia): Relationships with Beach Characteristics

Zamira E. Soto-Varela et al.

Summary: Beach water quality in 14 beaches along the Department of Atlantico in Colombia was studied, showing a clear relationship between the presence of E. coli and Salmonella spp. with beach characteristics, particularly in urban areas and places with beach facilities. The research also revealed an association between the presence of Salmonella spp. and streams lacking wastewater treatment systems. Monitoring programs should focus on urban areas and locations with beach facilities to enhance microbiological water quality and ensure beachgoers' safety.

Development a new index for littered waste assessment in different environments: A study on coastal and urban areas of northern Iran (Caspian Sea)

Ahmad Jonidi Jafari et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the coastal and urban areas in northern Iran along the Caspian Sea in terms of litter composition, finding that a majority were in a dirty state with cigarette butts being the most common litter. The Clean Environment Index (CEI) was introduced to provide a more realistic and rigorous interpretation compared to the Clean Coast Index (CCI). This new index can be considered for evaluating litter pollution in various areas.

Mangroves as unique but understudied traps for anthropogenic marine debris: A review of present information and the way forward

Ying Y. Luo et al.

Summary: Marine debris and plastic pollution have a significant impact on coastal habitats, including mangroves, but research on mangrove debris is still in the early stages. Standardized guidelines for future studies are needed to facilitate comparisons and assess ecological impact. Additional research on marine debris in mangroves is crucial for effective policy making and conservation efforts.

Anthropogenic pressure on mangrove ecosystems: Quantification and source identification of surficial and trapped debris

Selvam Kesavan et al.

Summary: Mangrove ecosystems provide ecological services and livelihood support, but are facing extreme pressure from debris pollution. The study shows that mangroves act as natural filters and traps for coastal water debris, but trapped debris poses potential risks and ecological disturbances. Regular cleaning programs and debris removal are essential for effective control and management of debris pollution in mangrove regions.

Abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics in coastal surface waters of the Colombian Caribbean and Pacific

Ostin Garces-Ordonez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the distribution of microplastics in coastal surface waters of the Colombian Caribbean and Pacific, and generate a pollution baseline. Results showed that coastal waters of the Caribbean areas were most polluted by microplastics, with fragments, filaments, and foams made of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene being the most common forms.

Aging effects on low- and high-density polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene under UV irradiation: An insight into decomposition mechanism by Py-GC/MS for microplastic analysis

Nina Maria Ainali et al.

Summary: The study investigated the aging characteristics of four commonly used polymers under UV irradiation and provided insight into the impact of UV exposure on the physical and chemical properties of the polymers. Various analytical methods revealed the significant effects of UV irradiation on the crystalline and thermal properties of the polymers, as well as the formation of new functional groups. It was also found that UV exposure altered the ratio of low molecular weight compounds to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and impacted the reliability of microplastic quantification in real samples.
