The effect of crab burrows on soil-water dynamics in mangroves

Marie Arnaud et al.

Summary: This study found that there is little exchange of water between animal burrows and the sediment matrix in mangroves, and that burrows act as an independent pipe network transporting water through the soil. Additionally, fine-grained mangrove sediments do not readily drain into adjacent burrows due to their low permeability. These findings have important implications for understanding and predicting mangrove carbon dynamics.

Sources and degradation of organic matter and its relation to trophic status in the core sediments of a tropical mangrove ecosystem along the Southwest coast of India

Anu Susan Cheriyan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the organic matter sources, trophic status, diagenesis, and the applicability of biogeochemical indicators in a highly urbanized tropical mangrove forest. The results show that urbanization has caused changes in sediment composition, and eutrophication has led to the transition from a land plant-dominated aquatic system to enhanced algal productivity.

Summary: Mangrove ecosystems in Kerala have lost 95% of their quantity in the past three decades, posing a serious threat to global climate. The carbon storage of these endangered mangroves is rarely reported. A study estimated the carbon stocks of mangroves in three habitats in Kerala, revealing their significant contribution to global ecosystem carbon.

Summary: This study revealed the efficient nutrient cycling mechanism of mangroves and showed that the invasion of Spartina alterniflora enhanced the coupling effects of NF and PS processes, positively impacting sediment quality and turnover of nutrients. The research provides insights into the effects of S. alterniflora invasion on subtropical mangrove ecosystems and offers theoretical guidance for mangrove protection, restoration, and soil management, as well as potential development of marine biological fertilizers.

Baja California Sur mangrove deep peat microbial communities cycle nitrogen but do not affect old carbon pool

M. T. Costa et al.

Summary: Mangroves play a crucial role in storing carbon underground for thousands of years. This study examines the relationship between carbon and nitrogen densities, microbial community composition, and the age of peat deposits. The findings show that microbial decomposition rate and sediment characteristics influence peat carbon density and microbial communities. Carbon dating allows the reconstruction of organic matter accumulation over a long time scale, demonstrating the stability of peat carbon density despite continuous microbial cycling of nitrogen in the peat.

Soil Carbon within the Mangrove Landscape in Rufiji River Delta, Tanzania

Zhaohua Dai et al.

Summary: Mangroves in the Rufiji River Delta, Tanzania were found to have a high soil organic carbon (SOC) density, with small differences among long-established mangrove sites in different geomorphic settings. Agricultural sites and dwarf mangrove sites had lower SOC and nitrogen density, possibly reflecting past disturbances.

Total alkalinity production in a mangrove ecosystem reveals an overlooked Blue Carbon component

Vincent Saderne et al.

Summary: Assessment of total alkalinity budget in carbonate sediments of Red Sea mangroves showed a large TA emission, supporting a high rate of CO2 uptake. Traditional focus on organic carbon burial may substantially underestimate the role of mangroves in CO2 removal. Including carbonate dissolution in assessments is crucial for quantifying the role of mangroves in climate change mitigation.

Dissolved and particulate carbon export from a tropical mangrove-dominated riverine system

Summary: This study estimated lateral exchange fluxes of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC, POC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in a mangrove-dominated estuary in Panay Island, Philippines. The results showed that the mangrove system acted as a net exporter of carbon to the sea in both dry and wet seasons. DIC dominated the estuarine carbon flux with only minor contributions from DOC, and POC was a mixture of detrital and algal organic matter.

Mangrove carbon stocks in Pongara National Park, Gabon

Carl C. Trettin et al.

Summary: Mangroves in Pongara National Park, Gabon were inventoried for carbon stocks using remote sensing data to stratify the area based on canopy height, revealing significant differences in biomass among height classes but not in soil carbon density. Soils accounted for over 84% of the ecosystem carbon stock, with a total estimated carbon stock of 40,588 Gg C within the park. This study demonstrates the importance of using remote sensing data and spatial decision support systems for large-scale field inventories of mangrove carbon stocks to support national reporting and sustainable management practices.

Quantitative evaluation through SGD and associated dissolved carbon showed that DIC is the dominant form of dissolved carbon export from mangroves to the adjacent bay.
