Evaluating Adherence With Voluntary Slow Speed Initiatives to Protect Endangered Whales

Jessica Morten et al.

Summary: Vessel strikes pose a major threat to large whales globally and endangered whales in California. Despite the voluntary speed reduction requests, cooperation levels have been insufficient to reduce the risk of vessel strikes to sustainable levels. Incentive-based speed reduction programs have shown improvement in cooperation, but funding and sustainability remain challenges.

Multi-sensor integration for an assessment of underwater radiated noise from common vessels in San Francisco Bay

Samantha Cope et al.

Summary: The research showed that besides large vessels, ferries and motorized recreational craft also contributed noise in certain frequency bands in San Francisco Bay area. The Marine Monitor (M2) system provided data on different vessel types for assessment of threat to local cetacean species.

Underwater noise mitigation in the Santa Barbara Channel through incentive-based vessel speed reduction

Vanessa M. ZoBell et al.

Summary: Commercial shipping is the main source of low-frequency noise in the ocean, and reducing vessel speed has been shown to significantly decrease noise emissions from ships. Ships participating in speed reduction programs between 2014 and 2017 had lower noise levels compared to non-participating ships.

REVIEW OF RESEARCH RESULTS CONCERNING THE MODELLING OF SHIPPING NOISE

Xiaowei Yan et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes research results and modeling about shipping noise published over several decades, outlining the research significance of low-frequency ambient noise and shipping noise, shipping noise source levels, empirical models, and measurement standards of shipping noise.
