Numerical study on hydrodynamic characteristics of coastal bridge deck under joint action of regular waves and wind

B. H. Wen et al.

Summary: Researchers conducted a series of numerical simulations to systematically investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of coastal bridge deck under the joint action of regular waves and onshore wind. The presence of onshore wind significantly distorts wave profiles, increases wave impact intensity on bridge decks and generates suction effects over the deck. The findings from this study aim to enhance understanding of the damage mechanism of coastal bridge decks during extreme weather events.

Study on transformation and runup processes of tsunami-like wave over permeable fringing reef using a nonhydrostatic numerical wave model

K. Qu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics of the transformation and runup processes of tsunami-like wave impinging on a permeable fringing reef. It discusses the effects of factors such as wave height, water depth, and properties of the permeable layer of the reef on the hydrodynamic characteristics. The study finds that the protective function of fringing reefs may be grossly underestimated when using the classical quadratic friction law.

Laboratory experiments of surf zone dynamics under on- and offshore wind conditions

Damien Sous et al.

Summary: This paper presents laboratory experiments investigating the impact of onshore and offshore wind conditions on nearshore wave dynamics. The results show that wind conditions can delay or promote wave breaking, as well as flatten or steepen the waves. Using linear and cnoidal wave models, the study found that adding wind effects can describe the wind impact in wave nearshore models, despite experimental limitations.

Barred beach profile equilibrium investigated with a process-based numerical model

Yuan Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the equilibrium profile of a sandy beach and provides detailed physical insights of hydrodynamics and sediment transport patterns on a quasi-equilibrium beach profile using a process-based model. It shows that both the magnitude and cross-shore gradient of sediment transport rate decrease during the transition to equilibrium, with the total net sediment transport in surfzone mainly affected by the balance between offshore-directed current-related suspended sediment transport and onshore-directed bedload transport. The study also proposes a dimensionless parameter representing the spatial uniformity of wave energy dissipation rate as an indicator of the equilibrium degree of a beach profile, suggesting a quantitative relationship between this parameter and the overall characteristics of sediment transport on a beach profile.
