Late-Holocene relative sea-level changes and palaeoenvironment of the Pre-Viking Age ship burials in Salme, Saaremaa Island, eastern Baltic Sea

Triine Nirgi et al.

Summary: Two unique Pre-Viking Age ship burials were discovered in Salme village, Estonia, with remains of seven men in one ship and 34 men in another. Archaeological interpretations suggest that these ships belonged to a Viking crew possibly from the eastern part of Sweden. Geoarchaeological research in the area provided insight into Late-Holocene relative sea-level changes and shoreline displacement, showing a linear fall in sea level between 1000 BC and 1300 AD.

Climatically induced cyclicity recorded in the morphology of uplifting Tihu coastal ridgeplain, Hiiumaa Island, eastern Baltic Sea

Ulo Suursaar et al.

Summary: Holocene relative sea level changes and palaeogeography of the Tihu ridge-swale beach system in the Baltic Sea were reconstructed using various data sources and models. The study found a linear trend in relative sea level changes over the past 7,000 years, which is strongly correlated with uplift models. The analysis of beach and ridge formations also revealed periods of enhanced storminess. These findings provide important insights into sea level changes and paleoenvironmental dynamics in the region.

A Holocene relative sea-level database for the Baltic Sea

Alar Rosentau et al.

Summary: This study compiles and analyzes 1099 Holocene relative shore-level indicators around the Baltic Sea, with a focus on data points related to the last marine stage. Results show that regions with negative RSL tendencies dominate, while transitional regions exhibit shifts from positive to negative tendencies in the mid-Holocene. Comparisons with GIA predictions highlight the need for improvements in ice-sheet and Earth-structure models, demonstrating the potential benefits of this new compilation for future studies.
