The recent cases in Scottish salmon farming industry show the need for better understanding of anemia pathogenesis and development of effective mitigation strategies.

Simultaneous Isolation and Identification of Largemouth Bass Virus and Rhabdovirus from Moribund Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides)

Summary: In this study, we identified and confirmed the presence of iridovirus and rhabdovirus members as the likely pathogens in diseased largemouth bass. Co-infection with these viruses was observed, leading to higher mortality rates compared to single infections. The viruses were found to be most similar to largemouth bass virus and hybrid snakehead rhabdovirus. Our findings provide novel ideas for the prevention and treatment of combined virus infection, particularly in largemouth bass.

Poor water quality parameters and the presence of aquatic microbial pathogens such as A. hydrophila and V. parahaemolyticus led to heavy mortalities in the striped mullet.

Summary: This study isolated Vibrio spp. from natural disease outbreaks of marine/estuarine fishes in India for the first time, unraveling the virulence features/genes and antimicrobial resistance phenotypes/genes. The results indicated that V. vulnificus poses a public health risk, V. parahaemolyticus can be pathogenic to fish without specific genes, and salinity induces virulence features in V. harveyi. Analysis categorized antibiotics based on efficacy against fish pathogenic species, with over 50% of isolates from low antibiotic usage areas. The study identified tetH as a predictor for tetracycline resistance in Vibrio spp., and predicted cross-resistance between antimicrobials within the species.
