Interactive effects of dietary cholesterol and bile acids on the growth, lipid metabolism, immune response and intestinal microbiota of Litopenaeus vannamei: Sparing effect of bile acids on cholesterol in shrimp diets

Chen Su et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing levels of CHO and BA in shrimp diets significantly improved the growth performance of Litopenaeus vannamei, with BA showing a sparing effect on CHO. Both CHO and BA had significant impacts on the lipid metabolism, immune response, and intestinal microbiota of shrimp.

Intervention of taurine on fatty acid profiles, oxidative injury and autophagy status in the muscle of rice field eel (Monopterus albus) fed oxidized fish oil

Minglang Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of taurine on fatty acid composition, oxidative stress, and autophagy status in the muscle of rice field eel subjected to oxidized fish oil feed. The results show that dietary taurine can improve muscle nutritional composition, oxidative stress, and autophagy status induced by oxidized fish oil, leading to greater muscle quality.

The intracellular cholesterol pool in steroidogenic cells plays a role in basal steroidogenesis

Geetika Bassi et al.

Summary: Cholesterol plays an important role in steroidogenesis beyond being a substrate for steroid hormones. Depletion of intracellular cholesterol induces autophagy, affects mitochondrial dynamics, and upregulates steroidogenic factors and basal steroidogenesis in different steroidogenic cell types, independent of hormonal stimulation. These findings offer new insights into trophic hormone-dependent and hormone-independent steroidogenesis during development, as well as in health and disease.

Future feed resources in sustainable salmonid production: A review

Sissel Albrektsen et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is a resource-efficient and sustainable method to produce animal protein, and it is predicted to play a significant role in the world's seafood supply. However, the growth of intensive aquaculture may be limited by a shortage of feed resources. This review explores the urgent need to find alternative ingredients for sustainable salmonid production. Various marine ingredients, microbial ingredients, insects, animal by-products, and by-products from other commercial productions are discussed as potential alternatives.

Multiomics analysis of soybean meal induced marine fish enteritis in juvenile pearl gentian grouper, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ x Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Soybean products can cause intestinal inflammation and injury in many animals, including human beings, particularly infants and juvenile individuals. This study analyzed the biological processes in the intestinal tract of marine fish under soybean meal-induced enteritis. Results showed that the growth and physiology of the groupers fed with soybean meal were significantly negatively affected.

Dietary copper improves growth and regulates energy generation by mediating lipolysis and autophagy in hepatopancreas of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)

Bo Shi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of copper in energy homeostasis by mediating lipid and energy metabolism in Litopenaeus vannamei. Dietary copper supplementation improved growth, tissue Cu concentration, antioxidant capacity, promoted lipolysis and autophagy, and up-regulated key genes and enzymes related to energy metabolism in shrimp. These findings shed light on the potential beneficial effects of dietary copper on energy metabolism in crustaceans.

Innate immune responses against viral pathogens in Macrobrachium

Ying Huang et al.

Summary: Some members of the genus Macrobrachium are economically important prawns and valuable objects for studying the innate immune defense mechanism of crustaceans. Their main antiviral defense mechanism involves the activation of intracellular signaling cascades to stimulate cellular and humoral responses against viral infections.

Replacement of fish meal with Methanotroph (Methylococcus capsulatus, Bath) bacteria meal in the diets of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)

Yongkang Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that replacing fish meal with methanotroph bacteria meal had no significant impact on the growth performance of Pacific white shrimp, but it did increase the oxidation level in the hepatopancreas and improve the gut microbiota structure, enhancing the disease resistance of shrimp.
