Influencing factors for effective establishment of residual resistance factor of polymer solution in porous media

Shijie Zhu et al.

Summary: Exploring the influencing factors of establishing the residual resistance factor (RRF) of polymer solution is important for effective mobility control in polymer flooding process and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The rheological properties, viscoelasticity, hydrodynamic size, adsorption capacity and other solution properties of different types of polymer solutions were tested. The results showed that displacement rate, polymer type and solution properties have significant effects on the residual resistance factor. Structural polymers have higher RRF at low flow rate, while linear polymers establish seepage resistance by increasing elastic viscosity. The adsorption retention is reduced at high flow rate, leading to a decrease in RRF.

Summary: Complex and active fluids in flows through porous materials have broad applications and can exhibit surprising flow patterns and transport properties due to the coupling with porous microstructure. Recent studies have investigated how pore-scale geometry influences the flow topology and transport properties at the sample scale. Towards Predicting the Onset of Elastic Turbulence in Complex Geometries

Eseosa M. Ekanem et al.

Summary: Flow of complex fluids in porous structures plays a crucial role in various biological and industrial processes. The occurrence of elastic turbulence, an instability arising from the coupling between fluid rheology and flow geometry, is common and significant in such applications, leading to an over-proportional increase in pressure drop and distortion of the flow field. Efforts have been made to predict the onset of elastic turbulence in flow geometries with constrictions, but the existing methods have limitations in capturing the flow perturbations accurately.

Characterizing purely elastic turbulent flow of a semi-dilute entangled polymer solution in a serpentine channel

Pegah Shakeri et al.

Summary: Polymer solutions in the semi-dilute regime exhibit complex rheological properties and flow characteristics. This study characterizes the dynamics of a semi-dilute entangled polymer solution in a serpentine channel using statistical, spectral, and structural analyses. Results show the emergence of purely elastic turbulent flow at high Weissenberg numbers, with non-homogeneous, non-Gaussian, and anisotropic features at all scales. The study also highlights the influence of polymer entanglement and the serpentine geometry on the flow behavior.

Birefringent strands drive the flow of viscoelastic fluids past obstacles

O. Mokhtari et al.

Summary: The flow of polymer solutions through solid obstacles or porous media is a complex phenomenon with rich physical effects. This study investigates the role of viscoelasticity in inducing a nonlinear flow response and increasing flow resistance. The researchers discovered that localized zones of high polymeric stress, known as birefringent strands, drive the flow and cause a reorganization of the flow patterns. This reorganization leads to an increase in the viscous dissipation of the solvent and stretching of polymer molecules, which result in an increase in overall flow resistance.

The Impact of Rheology on Viscous Oil Displacement by Polymers Analyzed by Pore-Scale Network Modelling

Iselin C. Salmo et al.

Summary: Experimental studies have shown that polymers with different rheology types can significantly improve heavy oil recovery, with shear thinning/thickening polymers performing better than purely shear thinning ones. Various conjectures have been made regarding the observed oil recovery results, but a clear explanation has not been conclusively established. The use of a dynamic pore scale network model (DPNM) helps explore the theoretical rationale behind these results.

Numerical investigation of multistability in the unstable flow of a polymer solution through porous media

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: The study investigates the flow behavior of viscoelastic polymeric fluids in porous media, revealing the formation of various unstable flow structures within a specific range of Weissenberg numbers. The elongation and relaxation of polymeric chains are found to affect the formation of eddies. By quantifying the eddy area and correlating flow patterns between different pores, as well as examining the relationship between polymeric stress and pressure drop, a better understanding of the mechanism underlying the observed flow patterns is gained.
