A Simple-To-Use Nomogram for Predicting Early Death in Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Population-Based Study

Tao Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a predictive nomogram for early death of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Using data from the SEER database, 6,005 mRCC patients were analyzed, and 11 significant independent risk factors were identified to construct a practical nomogram for distinguishing early death. The nomogram demonstrated excellent performance, discrimination, and clinical practicality, providing valuable assistance to clinicians in individualized medicine.

Successful 10-second one-legged stance performance predicts survival in middle-aged and older individuals

Claudio Gil Araujo et al.

Summary: The ability to complete a 10-second one-legged stance (10-second OLS) is independently associated with all-cause mortality and adds relevant prognostic information beyond age, sex, and several other anthropometric and clinical variables. Including the 10-second OLS as part of routine physical examination in middle-aged and older adults may have potential benefits.

Activities of daily living at hospital admission and estimated survival time of older patients

Jesper Ryg et al.

Summary: The study found that assessing activities of daily living (ADL) using the Barthel-Index can provide useful information to clinicians on expected survival time in older patients. Decreasing Barthel-Index was associated with increasing mortality in this population.

Summary: A new clinical model was developed and validated to predict the risk of AKI after cardiac surgery in older patients. The model demonstrated high discrimination, good calibration, and clinical utility, outperforming existing scoring systems.

Effects of Functional Strength Training on Functional Movement and Balance in Middle-Aged Adults

Ozkan Guler et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of functional strength training (FST) on balance and functional movement in healthy middle-aged adults. Results showed that FST significantly improved functional movement scores and balance control compared to traditional strength training. This suggests that targeted FST intervention could reduce the risk of falls and deficiencies in functional movement in middle-aged adults.

Balance and cognitive decline in older adults in the cardiovascular health study

Claire C. Meunier et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated an independent association between balance and cognition in older adults, with those aged over 76 and having poor balance showing a faster rate of cognitive decline. Participants with worse balance had a higher risk of cognitive impairment over the 6-year follow-up period.

Added body mass alters plantar shear stresses, postural control, and gait kinetics: Implications for obesity

Hwigeum Jeong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of body mass and distribution on plantar shear, as well as how altered plantar shear influences postural control and gait kinetics. Important findings included that added body mass increases plantar shear spreading forces, and body mass distribution has greater effects during dynamic tasks. Healthy young individuals seem to quickly adapt to external stimuli to control postural stability.

Evaluating and Balancing the Risk of Breast Cancer-Specific Death and Other Cause-Specific Death in Elderly Breast Cancer Patients

Yuan Peng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate clinicopathological features, treatment modalities, and survival in elderly breast cancer patients aged 70 years or older. The results showed that surgery, chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy were associated with improved survival, and older patients had a greater risk of dying from non-breast cancer causes.

From Disability to Death: A 20-Year Follow-Up from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging

Ching-Ju Chiu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the duration of disability before death in older adults in Taiwan, finding an average of 5.53 years of moderate to severe disability before death. Factors such as overweight and cognitive impairment in men and the number of diseases in women were associated with survival years. Gender differences were observed in factors affecting survival years among moderately to severely disabled individuals.

Vestibular contributions to the Romberg test: Testing semicircular canal and otolith function

Gabor M. Halmagyi et al.

Summary: Normal stance relies on vision, proprioception, and vestibular function. The Romberg test is a well-known assessment for distal proprioceptive impairment. Vestibular function tests nowadays are based on measurements of oligosynaptic brainstem reflexes.

Summary: The study found a strong association between motor function in early old age and mortality, with evidence of terminal decline emerging early in overall motor function measures (timed chair rises and physical component summary score) and later in basic/instrumental ADL limitations.
