Modeling and Analysis of Breast Cancer with Adverse Reactions of Chemotherapy Treatment through Fractional Derivative

Tao-Qian Tang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamics of breast cancer and visualizes the adverse reactions of chemotherapy treatment on the patient's heart using a fractional framework. The study analyzes the basic properties of the model using fractional calculus and investigates the existence and uniqueness of the proposed breast cancer system through fixed point theory. A coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics and Wells-Riley model to predict COVID-19 infection probability for passengers on long-distance trains

Zhaozhi Wang et al.

Summary: The study utilized coupled WR-CFD approach to analyze the infection probability of COVID-19 in a train environment, showing a reasonable agreement between predicted and statistically derived infection probabilities. It also demonstrated that the distribution of infectious aerosols is non-uniform and dependent on ventilation nature. The most effective mitigation strategy identified was the majority of passengers correctly wearing high efficiency masks.

Analysis of fractional-order dynamics of dengue infection with non-linear incidence functions

Rashid Jan et al.

Summary: In this study, a compartmental model for the transmission of dengue fever with nonlinear forces of infection through fractional derivative was formulated. The basic reproduction number (R-0) of the fractional-order system was determined, and the local and global asymptotic stability of the infection-free equilibrium were established. The threshold dynamics R-0 was tested to understand the importance of parameters in dengue transmission. Sensitivity analysis showed that the biting rate, recruitment rate of mosquitoes, and index of memory were the most sensitive factors in reducing dengue fever. The impact of memory on R-0 was also numerically evaluated. A numerical scheme was used to explore the overall transmission process of the proposed fractional system.

Summary: This study developed a continuous-time deterministic disease model to evaluate the impact of vaccination scenarios and protection measures on disease incidence. The results showed significant differences in disease prevalence and mortality rates between vaccination scenarios for low and medium-level protection measures, while any vaccine scenario was effective in limiting virus transmission and reducing mortality rates under high-level protection measures.

Safe reopening of university campuses is possible with COVID-19 vaccination

Matthew Junge et al.

Summary: We constructed an agent-based SEIR model to simulate the spread of COVID-19 in a mostly non-residential urban university with 16,000 students during the Fall 2021 Semester. Our findings show that a combination of 100% mRNA vaccine coverage and weekly screening testing of 25% of the campus population enables a safe reopening for in-person instruction. The simulations indicate that the total infections over the semester exhibit a right-skew distribution, which becomes more pronounced with lower vaccine coverage, reduced vaccine effectiveness, and absence of additional preventative measures. Furthermore, the model reveals that a safe reopening is possible even without facemask use if vaccine coverage is 100% and vaccine effectiveness is above 80%. The model also explores potential future scenarios with high coverage of additional booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Assessing Age-Specific Vaccination Strategies and Post-vaccination Reopening Policies for COVID-19 Control Using SEIR Modeling Approach

Xia Wang et al.

Summary: Developing vaccination guidelines for prioritizing vaccine delivery is crucial in effectively controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. Age-specific vaccination strategies were evaluated using an SEIR model, considering age structure and social contact patterns. The results suggest that prioritizing the younger population for vaccination can minimize infections, while prioritizing the elderly can minimize deaths. However, the interaction between age structure and social contact patterns may complicate the vaccination priority, requiring adjustments when reopening schools, workplaces, or households.

Two waves of COIVD-19 in Brazilian cities and vaccination impact

Lixin Lin et al.

Summary: This study modifies the SEIR model to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 vaccination in Brazil using death data from 20 cities. The findings suggest that the vaccination effects vary across cities and reinfection is not crucial in the second wave. The relatively high infection fatality rate may be attributed to the breakdown of the healthcare system.

Challenges of evaluating and modelling vaccination in emerging infectious diseases

Zachary J. Madewell et al.

Summary: Outbreaks of emerging pathogens present unique challenges for vaccine efficacy trial design, which require innovative and flexible study approaches to quickly identify promising candidate vaccines. Trial strategies should be tailored to specific pathogen dynamics, outbreak locations, and vaccine prototypes, within regional socioeconomic constraints. Mathematical and statistical models play a crucial role in designing infectious disease clinical trials.

Summary: Low- and middle-income countries show more engagement with health impacts of climate change in their formal statements to intergovernmental organizations compared to high-income countries. Important predictors of engagement include health outcomes (infant mortality, maternal deaths, life expectancy), countries' income levels (gross domestic product per capita), and fossil fuel consumption. Membership in political negotiating groups is a less important predictor.
