Association between subjective cognitive complaints, balance impairment and disability among middle-aged and older adults: Evidence from a population-based cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between subjective cognitive complaints and balance impairment in relation to disability occurrence. The results showed that the coexistence of subjective cognitive complaints and balance impairment significantly increased the risk of disability, beyond the additive effects of the two factors. Future interventions targeting these symptoms simultaneously are necessary to reduce the risk of disability.

Differences in lower limb muscle strength and balance ability between sarcopenia stages depend on sex in community-dwelling older adults

Summary: The study aimed to compare motor function in community-dwelling older adults with different stages of sarcopenia based on sex. Results showed that lower limb muscle strength was significantly lower in sarcopenia, low muscle mass, and low physical function groups compared to the normal group. Interestingly, the decline in lower limb muscle strength and balance ability was more significant in older women than in older men, especially in the low function group.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of resistance training on sarcopenia and frailty in older adults, finding significant improvements in handgrip strength, lower-limb strength, agility, gait speed, postural stability, functional performance, fat mass, and muscle mass. Resistance training was found to be an effective preventive strategy to delay and attenuate the negative effects of sarcopenia and frailty at both early and late stages.
