Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes Ratio in the Gut Microbiota and IL-10, IL-6, IL-8, TLR2, TLR4, TLR5 Gene Expressions in Type 2 Diabetes

Hrisi Bahar-Tokman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio in the gut microbiota as well as the gene expression levels of IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-8, TLR2, TLR4, and TLR5 in the blood of adult type 2 diabetes patients. The results showed that the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was higher in diabetic patients and the gene expression levels were upregulated, especially IL-6. These findings suggest a possible link between gut microbiota, gene expression, and type 2 diabetes.

Long-term diet quality is associated with gut microbiome diversity and composition among urban Chinese adults

Danxia Yu et al.

Summary: Long-term diet quality is positively associated with fecal microbiome diversity and abundance of fiber-fermenting bacteria among apparently healthy Chinese adults. Different food groups, including dairy, fish/seafood, nuts/legumes, refined grains, and processed meat, showed significant associations with specific bacteria species. More research is needed to explore the potential role of these bacteria in mediating diet-disease relationships.

F. nucleatum targets lncRNA ENO1-IT1 to promote glycolysis and oncogenesis in colorectal cancer

Jie Hong et al.

Summary: The study revealed a positive correlation between Fusobacterium nucleatum and high glucose metabolism in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), suggesting a potential role of gut microbiota in CRC development. Mechanistically, Fusobacterium nucleatum activated the lncRNA ENO1-IT1 pathway to regulate CRC cell glucose metabolism and biological functions. Targeting the ENO1 pathway may have therapeutic implications for CRC patients with elevated Fusobacterium nucleatum levels.

The association between dietary patterns with type 2 diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetes in the Henan rural cohort study

Yuan Xue et al.

Summary: In rural areas of Henan, China, dietary patterns were found to be associated with the risk of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Specifically, a dietary pattern high in vegetables, staple food, and fruits was associated with reduced risks of pre-diabetes and T2DM, providing valuable insights for diabetes prevention strategies.

The burden of ischemic heart disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus attributable to diet high in sugar-sweetened beverages in China: An analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Man Li et al.

Summary: The study found a growing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in China attributable to high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, particularly among young and middle-aged male adults. Over time, there was an increase in mortality, YLL, YLD, and DALY rates attributed to high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, especially in wealthier provinces.

Pinto beans modulate the gut microbiome, augment MHC II protein, and antimicrobial peptide gene expression in mice fed a normal or western-style diet

Babajide A. Ojo et al.

Summary: Supplementing with pinto beans (PB) has positive effects on the gut microbiota, SCFAs, distal ileal antigen presentation markers, and antimicrobial peptide genes in mice. It can improve microbial composition, increase antimicrobial peptide expression, and address glucose tolerance and fasting blood glucose levels.
