Navigating Stigma and Discrimination: Experiences of Migrant Children with Special Needs and Their Families in Accessing Education and Healthcare in Hong Kong

Summary: This paper explores the barriers faced by South Asian migrant children with special needs and their families in Hong Kong, and highlights the importance of addressing stigma and disability rights. The findings reveal that these children and families experience institutional exclusion, daily microaggressions, and a lack of understanding and awareness. However, some are empowered through support, accommodation and spiritual support. The paper uncovers a paradox in Hong Kong's commitment to disability inclusion, and calls for concerted efforts to reduce stigma by considering intersecting stigmas, unique resources for migrant communities, disability rights and cultural sensitivity.

Pervasive systemic drivers underpin COVID-19 vulnerabilities in migrants

Summary: Asylum seekers, refugees, and undocumented foreign nationals have faced increased vulnerabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, exacerbated by pre-existing systemic inequalities and discrimination. Transformative changes in asylum policies are needed to address the systemic drivers of vulnerabilities in these migrant groups.

Overuse or underuse? Use of healthcare services among irregular migrants in a north-eastern Spanish region

Summary: The study found that in the Aragon region of Spain, the healthcare utilization rate of irregular migrants is significantly lower than that of documented migrants and Spanish nationals, whether it is primary care, specialized care, planned hospital admissions, unplanned hospital admissions, or emergency services. In addition, irregular migrants also have lower prescription drug expenditures compared to documented migrants and Spanish nationals.
