Topography is more important than forest type as a determinant for functional trait composition of Collembola community

Takuo Hishi et al.

Summary: The relative importance of topography and vegetation in shaping local soil invertebrate communities is poorly understood. Our study found that topography plays a key role in determining species composition and functional traits, while forest types and spatial distance have minor roles. The total biomass of Collembola was higher in dry plots than in humid plots, but abundance, biomass, and species diversity were not affected by forest types.

Original karst tiankeng with underground virgin forest as an inaccessible refugia originated from a degraded surface flora in Yunnan, China

Wei Shui et al.

Summary: Karst tiankengs are rare natural habitats with significant value in plant species protection and biodiversity conservation. The plant communities inside and outside the tiankeng exhibit distinct differences, with higher diversity in the plant communities found in the primitive tiankeng.

Are degraded karst tiankengs coupled with microclimatic underground forests the refugia of surface flora? Evidence from China's Yunnan

Wei Shui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degraded karst tiankengs in Yunnan, China and discovers their role as unreported refuges for plant species. It finds significant differences in species composition within and outside the degraded karst tiankengs, with extremely low species similarity among the degraded tiankengs. Additionally, the study shows that the degraded karst tiankengs have a significant impact on plant richness and diversity.

Microclimate and habitat heterogeneity as important drivers of soil Collembola in a karst collapse doline in the temperate zone

Michal Marcin et al.

Summary: The study investigated changes in well-defined Collembola communities along a steep microclimatic gradient at the entrance of Silicka dnica Ice Cave in Slovakia after 10 years. It found that during the second study period, soil microclimatic conditions were more favorable, leading to significantly higher abundances, species richness, and diversity indices of Collembola communities. The dominance structure and community composition remained relatively stable, indicating high resilience of these communities.

Managing climate change microrefugia for vascular plants in forested karst landscapes

Zoltan Batori et al.

Summary: Microrefugia are small areas that support species persistence during regional and global climate changes, with dolines in karst landscapes potentially providing such areas. The study in the Mecsek Mts area of Hungary showed clear gradients of microclimatic factors within dolines, indicating significant changes after logging, suggesting logging may impact dolines to serve as microrefugia under global warming.

Summary: The study conducted at two microclimatically inversed scree slope sites in a deep karst valley in Slovakia revealed significant temperature differences in warm and cold periods of the year, impacting the distribution and abundance of Collembola species. The gorge bottom provided suitable environmental conditions for cold-adapted and subterranean species, serving as important climate change refugia.
