Single-cell Microbiomics Unveils Distribution and Patterns of Microbial Symbioses in the Natural Environment

Vittorio Boscaro et al.

Summary: This study investigated natural populations of Euplotes using a single-cell microbiomic approach and found a high variability in symbiotic communities, with individual hosts harboring different sets of bacterial endosymbionts. Accessory symbionts showed large variability in affinity, and competitive exclusion was observed.

Host Adaptation in Legionellales Is 1.9 Ga, Coincident with Eukaryogenesis

Eric Hugoson et al.

Summary: Bacteria adapting to living in a host cell had significant impact on the evolution of eukaryotes. The Legionellales, a bacterial order containing Coxiella and Legionella, may hold the key to understanding these events. Analysis of 35 Legionellales genomes revealed that this group is more diverse than previously thought, and key host-adaptation events occurred early in its evolution.

Multi-Gene Phylogeny of the Ciliate Genus Trachelostyla (Ciliophora, Hypotrichia), With Integrative Description of Two Species, Trachelostyla multinucleata Spec. nov. and T. pediculiformis (Cohn, 1866)

Tengyue Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationships within the genus Trachelostyla were investigated using morphological data, molecular phylogenetic analysis, and ITS2 secondary structures. The results revealed a new species and two undescribed species, and confirmed the monophyly of the genus Trachelostyla through multigene phylogeny. Molecular data were found to be more suitable for defining Trachelostyla species than morphological characters.

Mechanisms for establishing primary and secondary endosymbiosis in Paramecium

Masahiro Fujishima et al.

Summary: Primary and secondary endosymbioses are important driving forces in the evolution of eukaryotic cells, leading to the acquisition of new cell structures and functions. Recent progress in studying endosymbiosis using Paramecium and their symbiotic bacteria or green algae has provided valuable insights into host-symbiont interactions. These studies have explored the mechanisms of symbiont escape from host lysosomal fusion, migration within the host cytoplasm, control of host cell specificity, life cycle regulation, host cell infection, impact on host viability and gene expression, substance requirements, and genomic changes in both symbiont and host.

Cryptic Diversity in Paramecium multimicronucleatum Revealed with a Polyphasic Approach

Maksim Melekhin et al.

Summary: Paramecium systematics is well studied, but molecular analyses have revealed higher species diversity with uncertain statuses of potential cryptic species. This study describes two new Paramecium species, one of which is a potential sister species and the other can only be distinguished by molecular methods. The number and structure of micronuclei are not reliable features for species identification. The geographic distribution does not show defined patterns, and future discoveries of new species can be predicted from molecular data, while morphological characteristics are unstable and overlapping in some species.

Together forever: Inseparable partners of the symbiotic system Paramecium multimicronucleatum/Ca. Trichorickettsia mobilis

Timofey Mironov et al.

Summary: Ciliates form stable associations with prokaryotes at the cellular level. The antimicrobial peptide complex FLIP7 has shown certain anti-ciliate activity on the ciliate Paramecium multimicronucleatum, but failed to clear the endosymbiont Ca. Trichorickettsia mobilis from host cells. Trichorickettsia-carrying ciliates exhibited higher resistance to FLIP7 compared to Trichorickettsia-free strains.

Microbiome reduction and endosymbiont gain from a switch in sea urchin life history

Tyler J. Carrier et al.

Summary: Animal gastrointestinal tracts harbor a microbiome that is crucial to host function, but some species have evolved a reduced or completely lost digestive system. Research in sea urchins reveals that the lack of a functional gut corresponds to reduced microbial community diversity and abundance, along with a diet-specific microbiome. Additionally, it is found that sea urchins transmit a Rickettsiales that may influence host nutrition and reproduction.

Bacterial and archaeal symbioses with protists

Filip Husnik et al.

Summary: The genetic, cellular, and biochemical diversity of life is largely found within single-celled organisms such as prokaryotes and microbial eukaryotes. Close interactions between protists and prokaryotes, dating back at least two billion years, play a significant role in ecology. The study of diverse protist symbioses is shedding light on the broader impact of these systems on symbiosis theory.

War of the microbial world: Acanthamoeba spp. interactions with microorganisms

Mohammad Ridwane Mungroo et al.

Summary: Acanthamoeba interacts with a variety of microorganisms, acting as a predator, transmission vehicle, or incubator; it plays a crucial role in regulating bacterial density in nature and can also serve as a Trojan horse for microbial transmission or as an incubator for potentially pathogenic microorganisms; Acanthamoeba facilitates gene exchange and adaptation, leading to increased pathogenicity in microorganisms.
