MiMeS: Misalignment mechanism solver

Dimitrios Karamitros

Summary: We introduce MiMeS, a C++ header-only library for solving the axion equation of motion. MiMeS allows for consideration of various cosmological scenarios and axion-like models, and includes a convenient python interface. The library uses embedded Runge-Kutta method for numerical integration and cubic splines for interpolation.

Dark matter from axion strings with adaptive mesh refinement

Malte Buschmann et al.

Summary: Axions are hypothetical particles that may explain dark matter density and the absence of a neutron electric dipole moment. Current laboratory searches for axions face challenges due to the lack of precise knowledge about their mass. Previous static lattice simulations have provided widely varying predictions for the axion mass, but recent works using adaptive mesh refinement simulations have shown improved accuracy and suggest a mass prediction range of (40,180) microelectronvolts.

Cosmic perturbations from a rotating field

ALP dark matter from kinetic fragmentation: opening up the parameter window

Cem Eroencel et al.

Summary: The main mechanism responsible for Axion-Like-Particle (ALP) production in the early universe is the misalignment mechanism. This paper investigates three regimes of misalignment and presents a general model-independent analytical description of the kinetic fragmentation. It also calculates the parameter regions corresponding to different types of misalignment. The findings have implications for the determination of relic abundance and the formation of axion halos.

Future observations of gravitational waves may probe axion dark matter and baryon asymmetry, revealing important details of structure formation in the universe.

Predictions for axion couplings from ALP cogenesis

Raymond T. Co et al.

Summary: By adding the axion-like particle (ALP) to the Standard Model and considering the field velocity in the early universe, researchers have proposed the ALP cogenesis theory to explain the densities of baryons and dark matter simultaneously, with predicted couplings between ALP and photons, nucleons, and/or electrons. The predicted couplings are orders of magnitude larger than those for the QCD axion and conventional ALP misalignment mechanism for dark matter. As a result, ALP cogenesis is within reach of future experimental ALP searches and dark matter studies.

Michael Dine et al.

Summary: Axions have been considered as a plausible candidate for dark matter, but cosmic strings may also lead to appreciable axion production in certain cases. There is skepticism about the possible role of axion strings, with arguments that parameterically strings are already considered in the assumption of random misalignment angles.

More axions from strings

Marco Gorghetto et al.

Summary: Clear evidence of scaling violations in the contribution to QCD axion dark matter abundance from string defects is found, suggesting a large number of axions from strings. Nonlinearities around the QCD scale are shown to play a crucial role in determining the final abundance, resulting in a substantially stronger lower bound on the QCD axion mass in the post-inflationary scenario compared to the naive estimate from misalignment.

Axion fragmentation on the lattice

Enrico Morgante et al.

Summary: The article analyzes the phenomenon of axion fragmentation when the axion oscillates multiple times in a periodic potential, particularly in the case of relaxion where fragmentation provides necessary energy dissipation. Results show a comparison between linear analysis and classical lattice simulation, with agreement on the stopping time of the zero mode within a O(1) difference. Speculation is made on the generation of bubbles with different VEVs of the axion field and their cosmological consequences.

Axiogenesis from SU(2)R phase transition

Keisuke Harigaya et al.

Summary: The baryon asymmetry of the universe is explained by rotations of the QCD axion in field space and baryon number violating processes in the minimal extension of the Standard Model by a non-Abelian gauge interaction, SU(2)(R). The mass scale of the SU(2)(R) gauge boson is fixed as a function of the QCD axion decay constant, with a significant portion of the parameter space excluded by new gauge boson searches. The high-luminocity LHC will further probe the viable parameter space.

Axion miniclusters made easy

David Ellis et al.

Summary: The study presents a modified peak patch excursion set formalism for computing the mass and size distribution of QCD axion miniclusters, based on a fully non-Gaussian initial density field obtained from numerical simulations of axion string decay. Strong agreement with N-body simulations is found at significantly lower computational cost. The method employs a spherical collapse model and provides fitting functions for the modified barrier in the radiation era.
