Evaluation of CHROMagar™ Candida Plus chromogenic agar for the presumptive identification of Candida auris

Takashi Tamura et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of the novel chromogenic medium CHROMagar(TM) Candida Plus for the identification of C. auris. It was found that C. auris formed characteristic white colonies with blue-green halos on this medium, making it a potentially useful screening tool. However, distinguishing C. auris from closely related species required consideration of other parameters besides color.

Novel Chromogenic Medium CHROMagarTM Candida Plus for Detection of Candida auris and Other Candida Species from Surveillance and Environmental Samples: A Multicenter Study

Juan Vicente Mulet Bayona et al.

Summary: The CHROMagar(TM) Candida Plus (CC-Plus) medium is able to rapidly identify most clinical Candida species and differentiate C. auris. A multicentric study demonstrated that CC-Plus performed well in detecting C. auris and other clinically relevant Candida species in surveillance and environmental cultures.

Candida auris and some Candida parapsilosis strains exhibit similar characteristics on CHROMagar™ Candida Plus

Natalia Sasoni et al.

Summary: CHROMagar (TM) Candida Plus is effective in differentiating Candida auris from other Candida spp., including other species of the C. haemulonii complex. However, 44.3% of C. parapsilosis strains may be misidentified as C. auris. The addition of 8 mu g/ml fluconazole is proposed to address this issue.

Performance of Two Novel Chromogenic Media for the Identification of Multidrug-Resistant Candida auris Compared with Other Commercially Available Formulations

Auke W. de Jong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated five commercially available chromogenic media for the presumptive identification of C. curls. Among them, CHROMagar Candida Plus showed superior performance in detecting and identifying C. auris compared to the other three reference media and HiCrome C. auris MDR selective agar.

Characterization of the Differential Pathogenicity of Candida auris in a Galleria mellonella Infection Model

Victor Garcia-Bustos et al.

Summary: This study used an in vivo insect model to evaluate the virulence of Candida auris, an emergent multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen. It was found to have an intermediate degree of virulence compared to other known Candida species, with significant variability between strains. The ability of C. auris to filament in vivo and its early dissemination through the host, with a remarkable respiratory tropism, were also documented.
