Performance of a rapid immuno-chromatographic test (Schistosoma ICT IgG-IgM) for detecting Schistosoma-specific antibodies in sera of endemic and non-endemic populations

Julie Hoermann et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of a rapid diagnostic test (Schistosoma ICT IgG-IgM) for the detection of specific IgG and IgM antibodies against Schistosoma spp. in serum. The test showed a sensitivity of 100% in patients with confirmed schistosomiasis, and a specificity of 100% in healthy individuals and patients with rheumatoid arthritis. However, some cross-reactivity was observed in serum samples of patients with other helminth infections, resulting in a specificity of 85%. The Schistosoma ICT IgG-IgM test is a suitable screening tool for Schistosoma specific antibodies, but confirmatory testing is necessary in populations at risk of co-infection with other tissue invasive parasites.

Diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminths using the Kato-Katz technique: What is the influence of stirring, storage time and storage temperature on stool sample egg counts?

Felix Bosch et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of storage time, temperature, and stirring on fecal egg counts detectable by the Kato-Katz technique. Results showed that hookworm eggs rapidly decreased at room temperature, but could be preserved for about 110 minutes in a refrigerator. There was no significant trend observed for Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura fecal egg counts over time and storage temperature.

Diagnostic test accuracy for detecting Schistosoma japonicum and S. mekongi in humans: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Md. Obaidur Rahman et al.

Summary: IHA exhibited the highest detection accuracy for S. japonicum, followed closely by ELISA. Meta-analysis for S. mekongi was not possible due to insufficient studies. Further research is needed to identify suitable diagnostic methods for verifying the absence of S. mekongi transmission and compare detection accuracy against more sensitive reference standards such as PCR.

Potential of antibody test using Schistosoma mansoni recombinant serpin and RP26 to detect light-intensity infections in endemic areas

Mio Tanaka et al.

Summary: In this study, the detection of antibodies against recombinant protein antigens Schistosoma mansoni serine protease-inhibitor (SmSerpin) and RP26 showed high sensitivity and specificity in plasma samples, indicating an effective method for detecting light-intensity infections of S. mansoni.
