Quantum chemistry-augmented neural networks for reactivity prediction: Performance, generalizability, and explainability

Thijs Stuyver et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance, generalizability, and explainability of structure-based and descriptor-based molecular representations for predictive chemistry tasks. The quantum mechanics-augmented graph neural network (ml-QM-GNN) architecture is introduced, which combines structure-based representations with quantum mechanics descriptors to improve predictive accuracy and generalization to unseen compounds.

Iron-Cobalt-Based Materials: An Efficient Bimetallic Catalyst for Ammonia Synthesis at Low Temperatures

Rohit K. Rai et al.

Summary: Introducing cobalt into iron catalysts significantly enhances the efficiency of ammonia synthesis, especially exhibiting excellent activity at low temperatures. The study reveals a tuning effect on the surface of the catalyst by introducing cobalt, weakening NHx retarding species and making the iron sites more favorable for N-2 activation.

Systematic Study on Nitrogen Dissociation and Ammonia Synthesis by Lithium and Group 14 Element Alloys

Keita Shinzato et al.

Summary: The pseudo-catalytic properties of lithium-based alloys with group 14 elements were investigated for ammonia synthesis. The reaction temperature and the formation of products depend on the composition of the alloy, and the metallic feature of lithium species plays a significant role in the reaction. Furthermore, ammonia synthesis can also be achieved at lower temperatures through a catalytic process using a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen.

Tuning Materials-Binding Peptide Sequences toward Gold- and Silver-Binding Selectivity with Bayesian Optimization

Zak E. Hughes et al.

Summary: Peptide sequence engineering holds the potential to deliver materials-selective binding capabilities, but the identification of new sequences has been laborious and haphazard. The study introduces a Bayesian Effective Search for Optimal Sequences (BESOS) approach to significantly expand the dataset of Au-selective peptide sequences and discover an additional Ag-selective peptide sequence. Analysis of the binding motifs for the Ag-binders provides a roadmap for future prediction with machine learning to guide the identification of further Ag-selective sequences.

Electronic Origin of Catalytic Activity of TiH2 for Ammonia Synthesis

Yuta Tsuji et al.

Summary: Transition metals like titanium can easily form nitrides and hydrides on the surface, but not ammonia synthesis due to high Fermi level. However, the Fermi level of titanium hydride (TiH2) allows it to act as an effective catalyst for ammonia synthesis under specific conditions. The presence of nitrides on the TiH2 surface reduces the activation barrier for N-H bond formation by oxidizing nearby titanium atoms, leading to good agreement between theory and experiment.

Bayesian reaction optimization as a tool for chemical synthesis

Benjamin J. Shields et al.

Summary: Reaction optimization and parameter optimization are crucial in synthetic chemistry and artificial intelligence, respectively. Bayesian optimization algorithm has shown exceptional performance in tuning machine learning models and has been applied in chemistry. However, its application in reaction optimization in synthetic chemistry has not been explored. Adopting Bayesian optimization methods into everyday laboratory practices could lead to more efficient synthesis of functional chemicals.
